NEWPORT NEWS - Margaret C. Allen, 101, died peacefully on Feb. 11, 2010.
Mrs. Allen was a native of Statesville, N.C., where she was born on Aug. 2, 1908, and was a resident of Newport News for more than 70 years.
Before retirement, she worked many years for the Newport News Department of Parks and Recreation and the VA Hospital. She is a recent recipient of the Lifelong Citizenship Award presented by Newport News Department of Parks and Recreation. She served her church, St. Paul A.M.E. Church faithfully for more than 77 years. She was a member of the Steward and Stewardess Boards, Missionary Society and the Committee of Concern. In her community, she worked with the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA, the PTAs of her children's schools and the NNFCWC. Her life accomplishments were honored during the House of Representatives 1st session of the 110th Congress.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Allen, Jr.; four sisters, one brother and one grandson.
Due to her husband's early death, she reared five children as a single parent and all five completed college at Hampton Institute.
Her memory is cherished by her children, Marion A. Christian, John C. Allen, III and wife Gladys, Charles C. Allen and wife Sallie, Beverly A. Henderson and husband Rederick, and Lynne C. Allen; grandchildren, Charles C. Allen, Jr., Sabrina Christian, Carey E. Christian (Michele), John C. Allen, IV (Lisa), Lisa Y. Henderson, Monique A. Symons (David) and Karla Henderson-Jackson(Sean); great-grandchildren, Brittni Christian, Wanda Christian, Lindsey Allen, Sydney Jackson, Cecilia Allen, and Nathaniel Allen; numerous nieces and nephews.
The celebration of her life will be held at noon Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at the Hampton University Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow in Pleasant Shade Cemetery. The family invites you to view Mrs. Allen from 3 to 7p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Allen Scholarship Fund at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 2500 Chestnut Ave., Newport News, VA 23607.
