HAMPTON - Stanley W. Burchett, 91, passed away Friday, Nov. 30, 2012.
He was born Dec. 11, 1920, in New York City, to Harry and Belle Burchett. He had been a Peninsula resident since 1992. A WW II veteran, he retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel, in 1972, after 32 years of service during which time he was awarded a Purple Heart, five Air Medals and two Battle Stars. Upon retirement, he went to work as a civilian working in frozen foods, textiles, fine jewelry, retailing and publishing. He was an inventor with two International patents and was a pilot. Col. Burchett also enjoyed volunteering his time at the Hampton VA Medical Center and the Air Power Park.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Larry.
Survivors include five daughters, Mary Lynn Darchun, Barbara Grosso, Emily Viola, Nina Colligan, and Christine Chiafalo; two sons, Russell Burchett and Gregory Burchett; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A memorial service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, at The Chamberlin Hotel, Fort Monroe. Interment, with Air Force honors, at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a later date.
