Teodoro J. Braganza

NEWPORT NEWS - Dr. Teodoro J. Braganza, 88, longtime resident of Yorktown, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at his home at The Chesapeake in Newport News, VA . A mass for Dr. Braganza will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, October 14 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Yorktown, Virginia. The mass will be followed by a reception at the church. He is survived by his older brother Thomas Braganza of Los Angeles, California; his three children: Julia ('Lia) Braganza of Alexandria, VA, Robert (Bob) Braganza of Washington, DC, and Ernest (Ernie) Braganza, and daughter-in-law Karen Moore of Abingdon, VA; and by two grandchildren: Olivia and Gabriel Moore Braganza. Dr. Braganza is also a much loved uncle to many nieces and nephews. His beloved wife, Dr. Agnes Logan Braganza, passed away in 1991. Dr. Braganza, the youngest of a large family, completed medical school at the University of the Philippines in Manila and was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to complete his residency in Psychiatry at Duke University in Durham, NC. It was at Duke where he met and married Agnes Logan and started a family. Dr. Braganza then completed postdoctoral studies at the Menninger Institute in Topeka, KS. His practice took him to Asheville, NC, and Columbus, GA, before settling in Yorktown, VA. Dr. Braganza will be remembered for many things; his insatiable curiosity, his sense of humor, but most of all he was a healer, both professionally as a psychiatrist and perhaps even more powerfully as a musician. Anyone who heard him play felt the joy he shared with every note. He could play everything from mountain dulcimer to drums, but it was at the keyboards that he most often found his muse. We will always treasure the hours spent listening to him playing standards and seasonal tunes. As we grieve our loss, we find healing even now in his music, music which will continue in our memory and resonate in our hearts forever. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in honor of Teodoro J. Braganza to Charity Music which provides musical instruments to youth.
