POQUOSON - Thomas E. Gilliam Jr., 78, a native of Richmond and longtime resident of Poquoson, passed away Monday, October 28, 2013. He retired from the Daily Press after 23 years of service as a photo engraver, and went on to serve another 20 years at Anheuser-Busch Brewery. He served his country in the U. S. Army. Mr. Gilliam was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Thompson Gilliam, and daughter, Shelia Guinn Childress Buck. He is survived by his daughter, Starlet D. Wiggs & husband, Milton of Poquoson; four grandchildren, Derek and Alyssa Wiggs of Poquoson, and Amanda and Ricky Buck of Akron, Ohio; and a sister, Dorothy Ann McGuire of Suffolk. Mr. Gilliam started his Masonic career being initiated into the order of De Molay in 1950. He was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason by his father in 1957, and was a member of Poquoson Masonic Lodge #49 and served as Worshipful Master in 2012. He was a member of the Valley of Newport News Scottish Rites in 1973; a member of Warwick Royal Arch Chapter #80 and served as Tiler; and was a member of Hampton Commandery #17 Knights Templar and served as Sentinel. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose
#1711, and a member of Emmaus Baptist Church and the Coleman Moore S. S. Class. Masonic Rites will be conducted tonight, 6:30 PM, at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson, immediately followed by visitation with the family until 8:30 PM. A Celebration of Tom's Life will be held Wednesday, 11:00 AM, at the funeral home by Pastor Dan Cromer. Interment will be private at a later date at Parklawn Memorial Park.
