HAMPTON - Resident of Hampton, John W. Hardy, 68, died April 15, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family and loving wife of 23 years, Sara (Townsley) Hardy. Mr. Hardy was born November 3, 1944 in Winthrop, MA, to Ernest E. and Evelyn W. Hardy, Sr. As a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church, Winthrop, he served as an acolyte and crucifer. A lover of music and the organ, he was a member of the men and boys' choirs at St. Paul's Cathedral, Boston, and Trinity Church, Copley Square, Boston. An avid sailor, he loved the water and his competitive sailing tenure began at age 8. He graduated from Winthrop High School in 1962 and the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1967. He served his country in the United States Army into which he was commissioned on June 4, 1967. He served in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star
for meritorious service. After his retirement in 1989, as a Lieutenant Colonel, he worked for Riverside and served as Marketing Director at Patriot's Colony in Williamsburg, VA. He married Sandra (Vaughn) Hardy on February 11, 1969 in Auburn, MA. Their union produced four wonderful children and they have been friends to this day. He married Sara (Townsley) Hardy on August 19, 1989, in Hampton, VA. They have lived for 23 years in Hampton where they have enjoyed a wonderful life together. He was a faithful and longtime member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, where he served as senior and junior warden, vestry member, stewardship chair, and choir member. His love of music also served him as a member of the Virginia Choral Society. A service will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Hampton, VA at 11 AM on Friday, April 19th. Inurnment will follow with full military honors by the United States Army Honor Guard. He is survived by his wife, Sara; brother and sister-in-law, Ernest and Sue Hardy of Winthrop; son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Kimberly Hardy of Eastampton, NJ; son and daughter-in-law, Geoffrey and Sarah Hardy of Leesburg, VA; son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Tiffany Hardy of Hampton; daughter, Jessica Hardy of Chicago, IL; step-son and fiancé, Robert Van Aman and Ally Stratton of Hampton; step-son, Brent Van Aman and Kimberly Onks of Hampton; grandchildren, Jordan, CJ, Courtney, Kayleigh, Zach, Victoria, Tristan, Sebastian, Evan, Emma, Lily and Madilynn; niece/god-daughter and family, Kimberly (Hardy) Kennedy, her husband, David, and their sons, Hunter and Hayes of Winthrop.
