DENDRON - Pernell Newby Clarke Sr., 83, passed peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at Southside Regional Hospital.
A resident of Surry County, Pernell was born on Jan. 30, 1929, and was educated in the Isle of Wright School System. He was the son of the late Richard Clarke Sr. and Allie Jane Newby-Clarke.
Pernell is survived by his five children, Helen Parham (Fred), Faye Perkins, Pernell Clarke Jr. (Joeanne), Chris Clarke, Lisa Shaw (Wallace).
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Carrie Mae Gilchrist-Clarke; daughter, Timberly Clarke; and three sisters, Edith Wilson, Annie Maude Holloway, and Mary Lyttle.
He leaves to cherish his memory, eight grandchildren, Dana Parham, Marnetta Farrior (Bruce), GaJuan Clarke (Tequlisha), Danielle Ellis (Joseph Jr.), Shannon Clarke, Candis Shaw, Jasmine Shaw, and Cameron Shaw; nine great-grandchildren, Kaleb Parham, Zoey Gill, Carrie Gill, Ceniya Clarke, Kimora Clarke, Joelle Ellis, Joseph Ellis III, Teon Brown and Teasija Blakes; three brothers, Richard Clarke Jr., George Clarke, and Michael Clarke; four sisters, Violet Savedge, Uteria Hardy, Marvin Fisher, and Alma Hill.
Pernell retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation, Surry, Va., with 38 years of service. He was a faithful member of St. Paul Holiness Church, Dendron, Va.
Viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012, at St. Paul Holiness Church. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, also at the church. Interment will follow in St. Paul Cemetery. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
