Cristoforo RUSSO Obituary

POQUOSON - Cristoforo Russo, Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Brother and friend; passed away on Friday July 8, 2011.
Born in 1935 in Carini, Sicily, he immigrated to Brooklyn, New York in 1956 and ultimately Hampton Roads, where he founded the "Anna's Pizza and Italian Restaurant" family enterprise. In 1974, he moved to Poquoson, Virginia, where he lived until his passing.
A passionate and strong man, Cris was proudly devoted to his family, his work and his new homeland. Working tirelessly to pursue the American Dream and with a 3rd grade education, he strove to share America's promise with his overseas relatives by bringing them one-by-one to American soil, and helping them to find jobs, homes and stability. For Cris, hard work and family went hand in hand. As a unit with a common goal, he and his family continued to develop the Anna's enterprise, providing opportunity and instilling diligence and fortitude in his loved ones by employing his children, grandchildren, and extended family. In doing so, he helped sow the seeds of success for his many relatives and friends in the Italian restaurant industry. His influence extends throughout Hampton Roads and as far away as Charlottesville and Richmond, Virginia.
Quick to offer a meal and a seat beside him at the table, Cris liked to sit in the Anna's Dining room to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee. He was at his best when dining with his friends, loved ones and customers alike, demanding for 41 years that we treat customers like family. Sometimes that meant staying open after hours for the late tables and local raceway fans. When he wasn't calling the shots at his restaurant, he could often be found in a tree stand on his hunting grounds, or perhaps in his recliner either watching or debating politics. On Saturdays, he would often be found at the Langley Speedway, enjoying the races and company of his many friends. He was a member of St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church.
Most of all Cris Russo was a devoted husband and father who built his empire around an ethic of hard work and dedication to family. There is no doubt that he has guided and molded hundreds of lives, if not more, through his generosity and friendship. He truly IS a Hero to his wife, children and all those whose lives he touched.
Preceding him in rest are his parents, Anna and Giuseppe Russo; sisters Nunzia Buzzetta, Rosaria Buffa, Anna Russo Liguria; and loving brothers-in-law, Giovan Battista Buzzetta and Girolamo Buffa.
Surviving members of his family include his wife of 53 years, Josephine Leone Russo; children, Joseph Russo Sr. and wife Cindy, Salvatore Russo and wife Susan of Poquoson, and Anna Maria Buffa and husband Antonio "Joe" of West Point; grandchildren, Fabio Buffa, Luisa Buffa, Michael Buffa, Josephine Russo, Anna Russo, Cristoforo Russo, Joseph Russo Jr., Salvatore Russo Jr., and Christopher Russo; great grandchildren, Grant, Porter, Alabama, Adabella, Ethan, and Giuliana; a sister, Josephine Carollo and her husband Natale of Smithfield.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A service of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 13, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum chapel of Parklawn Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 500 E. Plume St., #10, Norfolk, VA 23510 or the American Lung Association, 5349 E. Princess Anne Road, Norfolk, VA 23502.
Friends are encouraged to visit www.parklawn-woodfh.com to share memories and words of condolence with the family.
Arrangements are under the care of Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA 23666. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

My sincere condolences to all the Russo family at this time. My time knowing Cris was not as lengthy as many others have noted, but it was always an uplifting experience to see his smile and greeting. A lot of times he would come over and sit at the table while I was making notes of the nights racing activity at Langley, and we would wind up talking about lots of different things other than the races. It was always enjoyable to go to Anna's to cool off from a hot night of dragging my camera gear around, have some great food and the opportunity to chat a moment with Cris. All the Russo family will remain in our thoughts and prayers and may your faith and the many wonderful memories all of you have be of comfort to you at this time.

As I walked thru the doors, of Anna's Pizza in the Hilton Shopping Center in 1973 looking for a waitress job..never did I realize my destiny was in the making. It was at this restaurant I worked with Chris, Josie, AnnaMarie, and Anthony. It wasn't long before I learned some of thier customs, hard work ethics, and the genuine closeness of this Italian family. You were always treated as one of them. After a few months of working, my brother in law Chris began telling Anthony to (takea this girla outta, she is a nicea girla for you) Of course speaking this all in the Italian language.
It wasn't until years later that I found out Chris said all this to Anthony. I often wondered why my ears were burning back then! Ha! All I know now is I was beyound blessed to meet up with, and now be in such a loving, caring, understanding and wonderful, close knit Italian family whom I am honored to call my "own". Chris, I will always hold you dear within my heart. You may be gone, but will never be forgotten!!!!

Josie,Anna,Joe,Sal & Family,

I cannot even begin to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. I didn't get to meet your husband/dad/grandfather but while we all were at the hospital in the ICU waiting area talking to each other, about all of our loved ones and what we all were going through together, you get to learn alot about each person in there and through all of you I felt like I had known him forever. All the memories that was shared at different times from so many different family members was so touching. I know he was a kind, loving and full of life man who loved his family deeply. I know it is so hard right now, but always hold onto all of your memories, that will carry you through this difficult time. I will always remember you all coming to my moms room and meeting her, and all of the kind words each of you spoke to her, that touched me so much and I know my mom felt very special as well. "Thank-you so much for that" I feel so blessed to have meant all of you, such a special friendship that I will always hold close to my heart. Please know that if you need anything just call. God Bless You All.

When I got the call that Cris passed all that I could keep hearing was Cris saying "Mr Luigi....I don't about you. I just don't know." It sounds so trivial to most, but that's something that I'm going to miss dearly. Even though there's no blood relation he's been like an adopted grandfather in many ways. He'll be sorely missed. With deepest sympathy, Lew

Our deepest condolences to the entire Russo family. You will be in our thoughts and prayers as you go through this difficult time. Mr. Chris was such a wonderful, loving, generous, caring person and has truely impacted a lot of lives in such a positive way. He will be sadly missed by so many that had the honor of knowing him and having him as a friend. I can't remember one time that we walked into Anna's and he wasn't smiling that beautiful smile and always made a point to come sit a chat a while. I will always remember the times that we would take him a mess of croaker into the restaurant after a day of fishing, and he would cook them up and we would all sit at a table and eat fish and salad. He enjoyed that so very much and it made us happy to do things like that with him. He always was so fun to be around. And bring politics into the conversation?? oh yeah, it was on! Loved it! I could go on and on, so many fond memories of Mr.Chris that will be treasured forever. Rest in peace my Dear Friend. We will miss you so. We love you!!

From Sheree & Howard Hilton, Devon, Will, and our girls. We were truly blessed to have been part of your extended family and especially to Anna tonight , your dad was truly an inspiration to us all. As things happen in life, I can see Sheree's dad and your dad sitting side by side at an Anna's table in West Point comparing notes, not wealth, education, or business success, only 2 things: family and work ethics. Both believed in working hard and loving times with your family. What a wonderful lesson for us all! To all, so many wonderful memories that you can always keep in your hearts will make the journey ahead a little easier and such a close family........Our love to all.

While we were not close and our relationship was business based initially through Joe and Sal, it grew into a frienship where I was greeted with a warm smile and some good conversation when we'd meet.Thinking back, I believe I always ended up smiling when around him. I feel that same feeling when around his family today and what a more positive thing can you say than he has passed his great spirit down too his family. He will be greatly missed.

Cris was an amazing person. I worked for him for a few years at Anna's Pizza in West Point, VA, and it was so easy to see just how much of a family man he was. He was so nice and really fun to work for, too. I have some fun memories. I remember one time he was giving me a ride home from work and he also was giving Ron Talley a ride. Ron got dropped off first and when he was backing out of the driveway he hit their mailbox. I won't type in here what he said, but I will never forget it. It was so funny! Another thing that sticks out was the dispute over who had the best lasagna- Cris or Joe. The last time I saw him was in 2004. I was in Hampton and was trying to figure out how to get back to West Point. There was a big traffic backup on I64 and I knew there was another way but just couldn't figure out how to get there. I was near Anna's in Hampton so I stopped in, taking a chance and hoping that Cris was there. He was there, sitting at a table with a lot of other people (I didn't know them, but he introduced me and made me feel welcome)- and, of course, he helped me get back home... I remember he used to make pizzas for my daddy and his friend Jimmy all the time...they would ask for "everything but the kitchen sink" and Cris hooked it up for them! Maybe the three of them are looking upon us all now together, watching over us, or laughing about the crazy times at Anna's in West Point... I know this- Cris was a wonderful person, he loved his family, and he was great with his restaurant patrons, always treating them the right way, the way they'd wanted to be treated. And he was awesome to work for, too. He will definitely be missed.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Buffas and the Russos and I am truly sorry for the loss of this good good man. Feel blessed to have had him in your lives, words don't make this type of loss better by any means, but to know how lucky you all were to have been a part of this man's life means everything.

I pray your strength in the Lord as you gather to celebrate the going home of your loved one. No, I did not know him or any of his family, but reading how much this man sacrificed for his family and to have a better life made me know that we all would do better and come together just like this wonderful man has done for his family and his friends as well. May the son's and daughters, grandchildren and others learn what dedication and hard work can bring...Love of family, strive for better days and the enjoyment of people...just like they are!
May God bless each and everyone of you and your hearts be full of memories. We all shall meet again!

July 11, 2011

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

My wife and I just celebrated our 40th anniversary on the 10th of July. Anna's was where we would meet and where our romance flourished. Visiting with Anna and some of the family and watching Mr. Russo orchestrating the restaurant. God bless this wonderful family as heaven receives a wonderful soul.

My prayers are with all of the Russo family in this time of loss. My heart broke at the news of his passing. Try as I might I have few memories of my life before I knew him. He was a great and honorable man - a man of heart.

The first time I met Cris was on my 17th birthday. My family was having dinner at Anna's and Cris came out with a beer mug of Sprite (back then it was all paper cups so this was a big deal!) and then he sang "Happy Birthday" to me. I never would have expected that I'd share so many more birthdays knowing him and the family. Though our last name isn't Russo, he always said we were family and I know how important his family was to him. Isn't it the greatest compliment to be loved? He was loved by SO many and he touched SO many lives. This is a sad time, but we will all go on and honor his memory. Anytime we walk into the restaurant he will be there---maybe not in body, but his spirit will be there. (And we'll still hear his voice jokingly---and sometimes not jokingly-- telling us that we "eat like a horse and work like a chicken".) He lives on in his children, Anna, Joe and Salvatore; his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. If we could take away your sorrow we would, but just know we are here for all of you. Much love, Tony and Laura Favata

To the Russo family,
I was saddened to hear of Cris's
passing. We was a wonderful man and he
will be greatly missed. I was always happy to see him as I delivered produce
to Anna's. In just the 3 years I knew Cris, he made such a positive impression on me, and I will remember him as a friend.

I am saddened to learn that we have lost an extraordinary friend. Cris Russo was one of the finest men that I ever met. I met him the first week when he was opening his first restaurant in the Buckroe Shopping Center. We became friends that day. I have never known a more fair and honest man. He told me about his early struggles in America, and having to return to Italy because he was drafted into the Italian Army. He also told me he had a difficult time getting back to America, but Cris overcame all of the problems, and built a wonderful future for his family. Although we have not been in close contact over the past recent years, I often thought of him as being one of the truest friends I ever had. My kindest regards to Josie, Joe and the other children. I know how much you loved him, because I shared that love with you.

On behalf of All American Performance Car Club I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr.Russo. Cris was kind enough to allow our club the use of his facilities for our club meetings, and always ensured we were well taken care of. We are thankful for the times we shared laughs under his roof, and we will keep him in our hearts forever.

To all the Russo's:

So sorry to read about Cris's death. What a passing of an era; he accomplished so much out of love for you all. Ann and I send you our prayers and our love as we remember the many enjoyable hours we spent talking with Cris at Anna's. His help at getting our own restaurant opened was priceless. His memory will live in eternity in our hearts.

Che Iddio vi benedica e consoli nella certezza che il vosto amato resta sempre nella Sua amore pacifica.
