George Fries was a man that truly loved his family and his country. He cared about decency and was an example of hard work and integrity! He was always willing to help others by teaching them. I admired and respected how he loved his wife, supported his children and adored his grandchildren. 'Til we meet again! May peace and comfort bless his family.

Whenever we heard that a teacher was out, the first question was, "Do we have Mr. Fries?" High fives all around when the answer was yes. Mr. Fries, you were an incredible man who was loved by all not just for your humor, but your high expectations. As a teacher now, I always hope to find a sub as good as you.

I remember Mr. Fries from York middle school and York high school. Even though he was a substitute he stood out among the rest and left a lasting impression because that's just who he was. We always were excited for him to tell us what was going on in the off season at Busch Gardens and we loved just hearing his stories during class. Rest in peace Mr. Fries

I am so saddened by this loss, he was a good man! My fondest memory of him is on the sidelines of the York High Varsity field hockey games yelling at me to "GET HUNGRY"! He was the only one I could hear out there on the field and really made me run faster, work harder, and play better. Rest in peace, you'll never be forgotten!

Among all close friends in a class of 227, George was much closer still as a member of 4th Squadron our first two years at USAFA. Summer bivouac, moving to the permanent site, and much more. Thanks for the help when my daughter was ill in Honolulu. Thanks for the camaraderie in the D.C. group.

One of my favorite substitutes. Sad to see him gone, thoughts towards his family.

August 11, 2014

I hope the family realizes that this man touched so many lives during his time as a substitute teacher and that the children of York County will be forever grateful. I remember several teachers who SPECIFICALLY would request Mr. Fries because they thought he was the best, and sometimes the ONLY one who could handle tough material in classes. He will be missed.

When I went to York Middle School and York High School, he was perhaps my favorite substitute teacher. When I first had the pleasure of having him sub one of my classes, I took interest in the fact he was retired Air Force; reminding me of my grandfather who served around the same time. I strongly admired his energy and dry humor. He certainly knew how to take charge of a rowdy group of students.

I remember the first time Mr. Fries was a substitute in one of my classrooms. I am sure he taught me lessons on the assigned subject matter, but the one I remember most is respecting our flag and the Pledge of Allegiance. That is something that stuck with me as a young student. I was surprised by his command over the classroom and I came home to tell my parents about it. Imagine my surprise when a few days later, we had to pick my sister up from her friend's house and out walked Mr. Fries! "That teacher" that taught us it was a privilege to be able to salute the US flag was a very nice man. In the classroom it was all business, but in his driveway it was jokes & laughter.

He will certainly be missed by many. The Fries family will be in our thoughts during this difficult time.

Becky and family, Tom and I send our sincere sympathy to your family. I had just seen George a short time ago at the Post Office. He told me how happy you were since you had sold your home. We have wonderful memories of time spent with your family. We worked many after prom functions. Happy to say we shared a few beers! George was a wonderful man. He will be missed. George was a great friend to the York High School Navy JROTC program and cadets. He was a huge supporter of the program, and we cannot thank him enough for his enthusiasm and leadership, always ready to mentor young cadets with words of encouragement. He will be missed.
