Phyllis GARLOW Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - On Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, my wife and pal, Phyllis Mayfield Garlow, went to be with the Lord. She fought a great and valiant fight against Alzheimer's disease for over eight years.
She was born on Dec. 2, 1951, in Norfolk, and had lived in Newport News for many years. Her greatest love and joy was graduating from Riverside Nursing School in 1984. Her nursing career touched many lives from Riverside Hospital to Brookside Home Care. She also was an angel to many at Virginia Oncology before Alzheimer's started to take her away from all who loved her.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Cella Manes Brady; and father, Colon Lee Brady.
She leaves behind her husband, Roger A. Garlow; a daughter, Shelly Mayfield (Terrah Jones and Josh); son, Robert Mayfield Jr. (Kristy); grandson, Robbie Mayfield; granddaughter, Brittany Mayfield; a sister, Ann Malik; and brothers, Tom Brady (Carol), and Lee Brady (Dottie).
A special heartfelt thanks to Gisele Bennafield (Garlow), Phyllis' special angel of Visiting Angels, and all the other angels; and, of course, thanks to Hospice Community Care, Sam, Trish, Brenda and Melissa.
There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at Weymouth Funeral Home. A reception will follow at RJ's Restaurant and Sports Bar.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Phyllis to Alzheimer's Association, Southeastern VA. Chapter, 6350 Center Dr., Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502; or American Legion, Post 992, P.O. Box 287, Mt. Morris, PA 15349.
Arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Tinkerbell's Mom. It has been 14 years since you left & opted for a new home with a new body. No more sickness, no more pain. I miss you Phyllis...you have taught me so much from the time I was allowed to care for you. A heart of compassion was my greatest lesson & I owe it all to you. Continue to watch over your family. It's really growing. I miss & love you dearly.

Phyllis...miss you girlfriend...we did everything together growing up. GA's, Girl Scouts, riding the bus downtown to the library, giggling the whole way about the cute sailors...PJ parties at my house putting tooth paste on the lips of those that fell asleep...many, many good memories. See you in heaven girlfriend...you "woke" up in heaven on Thursday. I will see you again someday!

You will always be in my heart. I will continue to yearn for the years that Alzheimer's stole from us. I will never forget your laughter, your smile, and your love of life. One day we will meet again. Until then, know that you are loved and you are missed.

P.S. If you see my Dad, please give him a hug from me.

Sitting in a booth at Doumar's, you told me when this time came to be strong and focus on the time we shared. Your famous last words will stay with me forever, "life is not fair!" Although Alzheimer's robbed me of many years with you, the diagnosis made me very aware of our limited time we would have together. It was the hardest thing to watch you gradually fade away, but I have comfort knowing that I was able to spend so much time with you over the years. You were the greatest mother in the world! I love you, Tinker Bell. You will live in my heart forever.
Now it is your turn to watch over me.

I met Phyllis when she first found out she had alzheimers, and she and Roger came into regis to get her hair colored. The thing that I remember most is what a good spirit she had. She was a wonderful person and I always looked forward to seeing her and Roger come in the shop. I could tell how much they loved each other. Roger you are very special, Phyllis was blessed to have you ! You also helped me when I found out my dad also had alzheimers. He passed away this September, and I miss having him physically here but I know that both him and Phyllis are their old selves again.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Roger and the rest of Phyllis' family and friends. Although I never met Phyllis in person, she was pretty much part of my everyday life, as her "special angel," Giselle would share in her daily love and care for Phyllis! I went through her good days and her bad days with Giselle and she was never far from my thoughts when I spoke to her! May God bless and keep you all and also to my friend Gisele for Phyllis will be deeply missed by her as well!

To The Loved Ones Of Phyllis: 1Th 4:13-14 Tells Us:But I do not want you to be ignorant,brethren,concerning those who have fallen asleep,lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again,even so God will bring with him those who sleep in Jesus. This has been a long road for Phyllis but she endured to the end.She is free from this horrible disease that has robbed her of life but she is now resting.I pray that God will comfort you, strenthen you & give you his Peace, which surpasses All understanding. I Love You All & I am Truely Going To Miss My Friend{PMG}
