Elizabeth Jones Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Elizabeth Frances Jones of Williamsburg, Virginia, passed away on October 22 after a brief, but difficult bout with pancreatic cancer. She was 79 years old. She was born on Staten Island, NY, as Elizabeth Frances Hunter. She graduated with honors from Albany State Teachers College in New York in 1954. She was then awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and spent a year studying and traveling in Italy. From 1956 to 1959 she was a graduate student in Classics at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, attaining a PhD in spring of the latter year. At Chapel Hill she also met and married Julian Ward Jones, Jr., a native of Fredericksburg, Va., and a fellow student of the Classics. In 1961 she came with her husband to Williamsburg when he obtained a position as a professor at the College of William and Mary. A few years later she embarked on a long teaching career at Christopher Newport College (now Christopher Newport University), retiring in 2001. She is survived by two sons, Gordon Bradford Jones of Falls Church, Va, and Douglas Ward Jones of Williamsburg. Also by one daughter-in-law, Presie Supremo Jones, and two grandsons, Xavier Jones and Zachary Jones, all of Williamsburg. A funeral service will be conducted at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, Va. 23188, on Sunday, October 27, at 3PM. Flowers may be sent to this address. It's hard to believe that it has been 10 years since Dr. Jones crossed the veil. Thanks for being my Latin professor. Thanks for helping me become endorsed in Latin. Hugs from here to there. Better yet, a nice glass of wine from here to there! :) Sincerely, Robert L. "Bobby" Oliver

Dear Ward, Please accept our heartfelt condolences. Liz was quite a lady; I will always remember her sharp wit, her love for Latin and Italy, and her zest for life. I will never forget that she loved to speak Latin at the parties! and I've always thought that the epitome of marital bliss must be when the couple still likes to read Latin together after so many years together. We hope that your many memories of her will keep you comfort at this difficult time.

Ward,Gordon and Doug,
Words are hard to express my sorrow for the loss of Liz. It is shocking and upsetting to accept her passing. She is a person I have known my entire life and she will be very much missed. At least we all know that she doesn't have to suffer through a terrible disease for long periods of time. Please know that my families thoughts and prayers are with you and we hope you will get through this difficult time. Look forward to seeing you at Thanksgiving.
Sincerely,
Mike Iannuzzi and family.

The first time I saw Liz, she was in the arms of her professor husband at a dance at the Greek Orthodox Church. I thought, "what a beautiful wife Dr. Jones has". Then I met her and knew there was a woman of not only beauty but substance - full of knowledge, well read and a sharp wit. Liz was a world traveler and I loved her stories of Costo Rico, her lasagne with friends in her home and the joy she took in her grandchildren. She looked healthy and vibrant just a month ago when we last talked. Her passing was unexpected and I will miss Dr. Elizabeth Jones. Deepest sympathy to Ward, Douglas, Gordon and the rest of her family.

I greatly esteem Elizabeth Frances Jones and Julian Ward Jones, two of my most respected colleagues. Both have been an inspiration to me, especially in respect to the way that have never stopped promoting the importance of Latin and Classics. I will really miss Elizabeth, but she will remain in my memories (and the memories of others) of some of our happiest summer Latin seminars in which she and Julian took part. My warmest wishes and very best regards to Elizabeth's family.

I am very sorry to hear about Liz's passing and pray that you find peace and comfort in knowing that she is not suffering. Her legacy lives on in the minds and hearts of those with whom she shared her life. I, particularly, have fond memories of sharing an office with Liz at CNU; our conversations never failed to interest and even entertain me! I also took a class with Liz because I knew that I could learn so much from her. My heart and prayers go out to you, especially Doug (who took my Spanish class years ago!). God bless you all!

I loved Liz' sense of humor....I'll miss that a lot. She helped me figure out how to write "Often wrong, never in doubt" in latin so I could get a t-shirt made for my husband with that on it. He loves it.

Ward, you have our deepest condolences; we were truly dismayed by the news -- which prompted wonderful memories of our trip to Italy together with you two last year. Liz was so full of life, so direct, a delight to be with. We will miss her! Our warmest wishes for you, Harry and Maury Cain

Dr. Elizabeth Jones was "my Dr. Jones."

I had been teaching Spanish and French for 6 years and wanted to add Latin to my teacher's license.

"My Dr. Jones" will always remain a brilliant teacher and professor in my mind, heart and soul. She and "Waldo Sweet" along with Dr. Philip Heesen at Millersville State in Pennsylvania, helped me earn the licensure in a record 10 months. The next year, I started teaching Latin.

Gratias tibi ago, Doctor Jones!

Dr. Jones has enriched my life. Her influence and tutelage extend past me to others in my family, to my students... and now to the next generation of Latin teachers whom I am teaching, supervising and mentoring through the School of Education at The College of William & Mary.

"Vita mortuorum in memoria vivorum posita est."

May your memories of our dear Dr. Jones' vim and vigor always be a comfort to you as you mourn now, and as you reflect upon her life and legacy in the future.

O Mea Carissima Magistra Linguae Latinae, Requiescas in Pace, nunc et semper.
--Tuus discipulus,
