Mary McDONOUGH Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Mary Thelma McDonough, 88, of Williamsburg, died on Oct. 15, 2010.
She was born on June 20, 1922, in Berkley, Va., and was preceded in death by her husband, James Paul McDonough; sister, Sophie Klimenko; and brothers, James Antonious and Tony Antonious.
Mary attended the Matthew Whaley School, and was the salutatorian of her graduating class. She was the original owner and operator of the Bassett Motel in Williamsburg. She was also a member of St. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, where she and her husband, James, ran Bingo events with proceeds benefiting it. Mary served as the past President of the Williamsburg chapter of the Daughters of Penelope, and enjoyed membership of both the Philoptochos and the Golden Hearts.
She greatly enjoyed the outdoors, and was an avid gardener. She was very involved with her family and the care of her grandchildren. She also enjoyed collecting antiques and dolls from around the world. She had a passion for Greek food, and enjoyed making Greek pastries. Mary had a very engaging 100 watt smile, which everyone knew her by.
She is survived by her children, Michael Nathaniel McDonough Sr., and Nell Ann Wichmann and her husband, Wayne W. Wichmann; grandchildren, Michael Nathaniel McDonough Jr., and his wife, Lea, Amy Smoker and her husband, Jason, Andy Wichmann, Allison Wetherington, and Christina Jones and her husband, Benjamin; and great-grandchildren, Jamie, Jodie, Jacob, and Grace. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Maryanne Florakis and her husband, Likis and their children, Dean and his wife, Kate, Niko and his children, Laki and Rena, and Demetrios and his children, Ellianna and Trey; Nicky Klimenko and his sons, Michael and Alex; Carol Guerriere and her husband, Jim, and son; Barbara Woody; Dennis Antonious; and Debbie Antonious.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Oct. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg. A service will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 11 a.m., with interment following at Williamsburg Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Mary and Jim McDonough may be made to the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church Building Fund, 1220 Richmond Rd., Williamsburg, VA 23185.
