Harmon STOKES Obituary

HAMPTON - Harmon F. Stokes suddenly answered the Lord's roll call on March 28, 2012, at his home.
He was born in Middlesex, N.C., on Sept. 9, 1928, to Victor and Esber Stokes. He was the oldest of nine children which included four boys and five girls.
Harmon was a devoted husband to his wife, the late Vallie M. Stokes, for more than 50 years. He was a caring father to his son, Billy and daughter-in-law, Lucille. He loved his granddaughter, Brittia Morrisette and his four great-grandchildren; and grandsons, Mario Goins and Landrum Morrisette.
He retired from the U.S. Army, Fort Eustis, Va., and James River Reserve Fleet.
He was an active member of the Aberdeen Gardens Historic and Civic Association and was Safety Captain of his neighborhood. If you needed help with almost anything, Harmon was there to help, no matter if you were an adult or child. He will be missed and loved for helping others, his sense of humor and his big smile.
Harmon was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Esber Stokes; one sister, Rose Poindexter; three brothers, William, Hurbert and James.
Survivors include his son, Billy Stokes (Lucille), of Benton Harbor, Mich.; four sisters, Lessie Thompson, of Portsmouth, Va., Barbara Bushrod (Maurice) and Ann Vaughn, of Washington, D.C., Beatrice Stokes, of Lake Anna, Va.; grandchildren, Brittia and Landrum Morrisette, of Portsmouth, Va., and Mario Goins, of Kalamazoo, Mich. Sincere thanks to his special friend, Mary McIver, of Bailey, N.C.
A funeral service will be held at noon, Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at Little Zion Baptist Church, Hampton. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be from 1 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home and two hours prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
