Mattie Harrison Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Mattie "Lumpy" Baker Harrison, daughter of the late Sarah and Wesley Glee, was born on Aug. 30, 1926, in Newport News, Va.
"Mattie" as she was affectionately known, an extraordinary woman, was received home suddenly by her Heavenly Father to eternal rest, Wednesday, May 26, 2010. An angel truly received her wings.
She accepted Christ at an early age where she joined and was baptized at First Baptist Church Newport News, now First Church of Newport News (Baptist). She loved her church, pastor and members and always had an infectious laugh or smile whenever approached by others.
She was educated in the Newport News Public School System, graduating in the Huntington High School Class of 1944. She loved her class and all of its history and actively participated and enjoyed their many activities throughout the years. She also attended many hours of college curriculum to attain certifications in dietary studies from various colleges in Virginia and in North Carolina.
Her career began at McDonald Army Hospital, Fort Eustis, Va., where she worked for more than 41 years, as a dietetic technician, retiring Oct. 31, 1990.
Mattie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas Harrison, whom she enjoyed a wonderful life until the Lord took him home Nov. 9, 2007; late husband, Nelson Baker Sr.; brother, Robert Moore; sister, Frances Bailey; and grandson, Robert Lewis Jr.
Her legacy of love will continue to live on in and through her three loving adult children, Nelson Baker Jr., Ella Nash (James) and Darnell Baker (Gladys-Gaskill); grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a host of loving relatives and friends.
A service celebrating her life's journey will be held 1p.m. Friday, June 4, 2010, at First Church of Newport News (Baptist), 2300 Wickham Avenue, Newport News, VA 23607. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and two hours prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Arrangements are by O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

To Nelson,Sister,and Darnell,
My deepest sorrow in the lost of your beautiful mother. Ma Baker was a kind, loving, and giving person . She was a easy person to talk to, and she made you feel like you were special. The last time I talked to her we talked about both our lives, and our grand-children. Ma Baker gave me some good advice about my life. Just pray for strength, faith, and continue to love one another.I feel blessed in knowing such a loving person .

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
