Jean SCOTT Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Jean Reynolds Scott, 85, passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2010.
One of 12 children, Jean grew up in the mill town of Martinsburg, W.Va., during the Great Depression. She graduated from Martinsburg High School before moving to Newport News, Va., when she was 18 years old.
During WWII, Jean trained as a United States Nurse Cadet at Elizabeth Buxton Hospital. She spent most of her adult life working as a registered nurse. She loved her profession and talked about its joys and difficulties often. With her husband, Beanie, she also raised four children.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Beanie Scott; daughter, Pam Willis; six brothers; and five sisters.
She is survived by her son, Wade Scott and wife, Joanne; daughters, Candy Boney and husband, David and Deedee Jamison and husband, Doug; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren who knew her as 'Nanny'.
Jean is remembered primarily as a woman who loved music and community. She played piano at Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church for many years. She was past Matron and pianist for the Emera Chapter #31 of the Eastern Star and was also a member of York Chapter #110 of the Eastern Star and was appointed Grand Organist by the Grand Chapter Eastern Star of Virginia. She also volunteered to play music for many other churches and organizations across the Tidewater region. Jean was known among her family for her infectious laugh, her collection of angels, her unquenchable sweet tooth, her love of game shows, her arresting candor, and her creative fruit cocktails. Most of all, she is remembered as someone who had an uncanny gift for making people laugh with her. She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.
An Order of the Eastern Star service will be held at 6:45 p.m. Friday, July 16, 2010, at Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends until 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 17, also at Chestnut Memorial with the Rev. Bob Gochenour and the Rev. Rita Staul officiating. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
Memorial donations may be made to Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church, 1024 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA 23601.
Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Wade, Candy, and Deedee and Family;
Please accept our sincere condolences on the loss of your mother. Jean was one of the 1997-1998 Eastern Star Worthy Matrons in the Tidewater area and therefore a member of the "Tidewater Cardinals Club". She enjoyed our club meeting and socializing with her Eastern Star friends. Her music was inspirational and we will sorely miss her bubbly, contagious personality and her love of life. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Wade, Candy, and Deedee and Family, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Your Mother was a GREAT lady. She is a big part of my memories of Chestnut. I remember when I was a little girl and I loved when she would come in and play the piano for us. And my grown children got to enjoy the same thing. My whole Family just loved Mrs. Scott. She will be truly missed.

To All.....Jean was THE BEST when it came time for giving shots or vaccinations at the Newport News Health Department. I know, because she stuck me quite a few times and always gave me a piece of candy after the shot. Jean was good at what she did, and did so with a cheerful spirit......

Candy, DeeDee and Wade,
Jeannie had left a great void in our lives. She was a good friend. I loved her funny stories, listening to her play the piano, and our crazy "weather reports" too one another. She was a beautiful woman inside and out. Her laughter was infectious.

I am so sorry to hear about the lose of your Mother. We worked together many years ago a the VA hospital and she was such a wonderful lady. Wade, I remember you as "Weanie", our paper boy. We lived around the corner from you on Rolfe Place. Jean and I often rode to work together. Many times she would be playing the piano when I came by. She will be greatly missed.

Wade,
Jerry and I want you to know that you and your family are in our hearts, and we pray that you will find comfort in your memories of your mother and the family love you shared. We did not know her, but, from what we have read about her, she was a grand lady. To have raised a son like you also says much about her. We hope to see you and give you our love in person.

Love,
Jerry and Judy Allen

Candy, Deedee and Wade--I'm so sorry I can't be with you this weekend. Aunt Jeanie was such a great, fun lady to be around. My fondest memories of her are as she bounced around on the piano stool playing as those of us standing around sang gospel music and laughed as we carried on as only a crowd of Reynolds relatives could do. As one of the older Reynolds grandchildren I can remember her as a young woman and she and the other 2 "J's", Joyce and Junie seemed to always be laughing when they were still girls at home. May her last travels lighten her way and may she find her loved ones waiting for her there!
Love You All, Rachel Wright and family

It is with overwhelming sadness that I write this. Jeannie was such a wonderful friend and "sister" in Eastern Star. Her smile brightened every room she was in and her music warmed every heart. The last time I saw her was at lunch with her daughter and of course I got a big hug and a beautiful smile. Our world has been a much better place with Jeannie as part of it and now she has joined the angels that she loves so much. My heartfelt sympathy to your family. Love,
