This world is a better place, having had Mary Helen Porter in it. She loved all of God's children and all of His animals (especially cats). Once you met Mary Helen, you never forgot her, for she would touch your soul. Very few of us can love unconditionally, but Mary Helen could. She loved and cared for everyone and gave each one the benefit of the doubt. She always gave 110% of her ability to help someone else. She was lalways buying little gifts that she thought would "make someone's day" and every kind deed was never done w/o her writing you a thank-you note, for she so appreciated every little act of kindness that was shown to her. God used her as an instrument to care for those whom she came in contact with. She always gave and never expected anything in return. She not only talked the talk, but she walked the walk. She was a hard worker in her daily physical, emotional and spiritual life. I shared many cups of coffee and broke bread at Mary Helen's table many times over the past years and I've heard her bare her soul. She loved her children and grandchildren beyond measure and cared for her friends the same way. I will always hold this dear friend's memory close to my heart.

I am so sorry to hear about Mary Helen. What a wonderful person who loved the children so much. Mary Helen was a tutor for my daughter Mary and my daughter Dianna loved her when she came to sub at Nelson where both girls went and I work at. Loved talking to her and catching up. Bless all of you.

Mary Helen was a very dear person who cared for all her friends. I will miss her at our monthly teacher luncheons. She was a pleasure to know and to work with while at Epes.

Mrs. Porter was the best teacher, parent, and substitute teacher. I loved talking to her and seeing her when she was in the building at R. O. Nelson Elementary.

26 years ago as a 5th grade student in Mrs. Porters class, I never thought all these years later that I would say thank you for your part in my education.

When I started teaching at Epes Elementary 27 years ago, I wanted to BE Mary Helen Porter. She was the epitome of "The" great teacher. She was loving, caring, and concerned for every child she taught. Her students knew she wanted the best for them. I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that Mary Helen touched many, many lives. She will be remembered always.

Dear Scott, April and family,
Norman and I were so surprised and sad to hear about Mary Helen's death. She was an exceedlingly caring and loving person. Her family and my family grew up in the same neighborhood and have been long friends because of that. We have stayed in touch over the years and will miss her very much. She loved you and was proud of your accomplishments. She will be remembered!
