Rebecca SHERMAN Obituary
Mrs. Sherman was born Jan. 27, 1941, in Newport News. She was a graduate of Stratford Junior College for Women and received an associate degree from Pan American Secretarial School. "Becky" was active in the Junior League of Hampton Roads, Huntington Garden Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, and in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, where she was a volunteer receptionist and served for 25 years on the Altar Guild. She was a member of the James River Country Club and The Hampton Yacht Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Woodward Meredith Sherman Jr.; and her parents, Paul Hogg, M.D. and Dorothy Williams Hogg.
She is survived by two brothers, John Roger Hogg, M.D. and his wife, Carol Hogg, M.D. of Newport News, and Paul Hogg Jr., D.Min. and his wife, Toni of Gloucester Point; her nephews, Paul Hogg, M.D. and his wife, Ashley of Suffolk, Capt. John Chandler Hogg and his wife, Amber of Hampton, and John Edwin Hogg and his wife, Cameron of Charleston, S.C.; as well as two grand-nieces, Caroline and Frances Grace Hogg; and one grand-nephew, John Campbell Hogg, all of Suffolk.
Private burial will precede the 5:30 p.m. memorial service on July 1, 2010, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Rhonda E. Wheeler and the Rev. Richard H. Holley. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
The family expresses its deepest appreciation to all her friends and caregivers in the community and her church, The Newport staff, and Dr. John Mattern.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church Memorials Committee, 45 Main Street, Newport News, VA 23601; or Golden Retriever Rescue: SEVA GREAT, P.O. Box 8014, Yorktown, VA 23693.

Charlie and I have been out of town much of this summer and have just hear that Becky died. She was a wonderful neighbor and friend. She was always quick with an encouraging word and her devotion to her husband was an inspiration. She will be greatly missed.

I have wonderful, happy memories of growing up with Becky in Hilton Village. When I last visited her at the Newport, unfortunately I was unable to awaken her, so I basically said my goodbye to her then. I am glad that she didn't seem to be suffering. My thoughts and prayers have been with all of her family.

Arlene, Ashley and I send our deepest sympathies. I will cherish all of my memories of Becky, and of course Skippy too. They were truly wonderful people, and will be missed by all those they touched.

Becky was a life-long, dear and treasured friend. Her gifts of care and concern for others serve as a wonderful example for us all and shape our memories of her shining spirit. Peter, Toni, John and Cameron...and all of the Hogg family...please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your sister. I remember her warm and outgoing nature, always supportive in a family that cared deeply for each other and all others.
