Stephen GOWENS Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Stephen Douglas Gowens II found peace in his Savior, June 18, 2010.
He was a lifelong Peninsula resident, graduate of Gloucester High School, and a member of World Outreach Worship Center. His family was his first love, and was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, son and uncle.
He worked with his dad and family, at Auto Market, Inc., for 18 years, and took great pride in whatever he did, be it reconditioning cars, selling cars, gardening with his mother-in-law or listening to music with his son. Steve was a man of his word, if he told you he would do it, you could trust he would. He loved sports, music, and was a fair and loving person. His family knew they could always talk to him about anything and not be judged.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Devon Gowens; four daughters, Ashley Pryor and her husband, McKinley, Alexandra Reid, Olivia Canady, and Sara Elizabeth Gowens; two sons, Christopher Gowens and Jeremiah Reid; parents, Stephen Sr., and Patti Gowens; mother, Cynthia Spencer; two and a half grandchildren, Brandon and Jordan Pryor, and on the way next month, Matthew Douglas Pryor; his two nieces, Hope Madison 'Little Bo Peep' Breeding, and Macy Spencer; two brothers, David J. Breeding Jr. and wife, Vickie, and Max Spencer and wife, Casey; and his in-laws, Ernest and Catherine 'mom and pop' Reid.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, June 21, at Peninsula Funeral Home. A memorial service, officiated by Chaplain Marie Boyd and Brother John Lamar, will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the World Outreach Worship Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be sent to Stoney Run Park on Mercer Lane in Denbigh.
Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

We are all very sorry for the loss of a father, a son, a husband. It's only at times like these that you realize that the effort should have been made for us to bridge the miles and get to know our extended family. I am sorry to have missed the opportunity to know him as a man. Our thoughts will be with you all tomorrow. Love, Sharon, Jeffrey, Michael, Lisa and Matthew Holly Evelyn Gowens Children
