Suzanne DASSEL Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - On Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, Suzanne Winneberger Dassel, beloved wife of William L. Dassel, lost her battle with pulmonary fibrosis (or whatever the diagnosis was).
Affectionately nicknamed, Suzi or Sue, she was born in Philadelphia on Jan. 23, 1946, and was the daughter of Col. George L. and Marion S. Winneberger, who predeceased her.
As a military brat, she lived in many places across the U.S. and ended up settling in Newport News in 1976. She worked for several attorneys in this area and enjoyed a successful career with the National Center for State Courts from 1983 to 2004. She did volunteer work for the Peninsula Agency on Aging, the Menchville House, and the City of Newport News Neighborhood Watch program until her illness. She got a lot of pleasure out of decorating/remodeling projects in her home and was often asked for decorating advice from friends. When she was not able to garden anymore, her favorite pastime became stitching crewel needlework, particularly the English Jacobean designs of Phillipa Turnbull. She had a great love of animals, especially dogs, and carried her 4-legged furbabies, Oliver and Annie, in her heart. She exemplified the qualities of honesty, dependability, and fairness.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; a 'special' daughter, Megan of Pensacola, Fla.; a brother, Dr. Walter Winneberger of Williamsburg; a niece, nephew, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Also, her beloved Schnauzers, Pixie Ann and Lacie Jane.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, at Peninsula Funeral Home.
In keeping with Suzi's wishes, memorial contributions to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 1332 N. Halsted, Chicago IL 60642 (312-587-9272) or the Animal Aid Society, PO Box 1865, Grafton, VA 23692 would be deeply appreciated.
Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Sue was such a great friend and co-worker and God Bless her, she introduced me to Greenfront, a furniture town in VA! That woman cost me a lot of money but we had such a good time sharing our experiences and loving her Bill, our schnauzers and our lives. You are always missed dear lady!

Sue was such a dear friend and colleague. She had many challenges in her life but she met them all with courage and grace, with Bill by her side. I drove by their house recently and remembered the good times we shared. God bless Sue - I miss you!

What a wonderful woman, wife and friend! Sue was a great friend to me the moment we met at The National Center for State Courts and our friendship continued until she left us. She had a quiet and rather shy personality but her caring and humor would shine through andI worked hard for those laughs. And of course we bonded through our love of schnauzers! Rest In Peace Sue - you are missed!

Sue was a dear and loyal friend for many, many years. Her quiet humor was a delight and we bonded over our love of schnauzers. I miss her a lot. And she loved, loved, loved her Bill.

Sue was one of my oldest, dearest friends. We met at 18 at business school, shared our first apartment, and every secret. We often lived long distances apart, but each time we spoke on the phone or visited each other we could pick up right where we left off. She was a wonderful friend, we always had each other's backs. I will miss her greatly. My prayers are with her family, especially Bill. Bill has always been there for Sue no matter what and has my love and friendship forever for that.

Sue was an amazing, kind hearted person who always saw the good in people. Not only was she considerate and fair to all individuals, she loved her sweet doggies (because, after all, they are human too) and mostly, she adored her wonderful Bill.

We will miss her greatly.

I also worked with Sue at the National Center for State Courts for many years. She was a dedicated worker and always had a cheerful attitude and a smile on her face. May God's peace be with her family during this difficult time.

I had the privilege of working with Sue at NCSC for 21 years. She was a wonderful lady and will be greatly missed.

Oh our darling Sue! She never had a bad word to say about anyone and was the sweetest friend anyone could ask for. She loved her Bill without exception and was his fiercest defender; her darling pups, both angel and Earth pups, were her heart and comfort. Her friends and neighbors adored her. I worked with her for years at the National Center for State Courts and whatever the tensions and conflicts, Sue was always a center of calm and reason - and humor. Her quiet humor, sweet disposition and solid sense of ethics was an anchor to all. Even after her accident, she worried about being able to return to a job she loved. I hope she was cherished as much as she cherished. Sue was a constant, abiding friend and I loved her without exception. My only comfort in her passing is that now she is well, without pain and joined with her beloved parents, grandparents and Angel dogs. I was blessed and honored to have known and loved her. May God bless Bill and those she loved.

Much, much love,

Carol and David Davanay
