William DRISCOLL Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - William (Eddie) Driscoll passed away on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, in his home after a long illness. Eddie was born July 15, 1932, in Richmond, Va., and raised with his nine siblings.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joshua C. and Minnie Russell Driscoll; and brother, John Driscoll.
As a young man, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving four years on the U.S.S. Philippine Sea (CVA 47), stationed in Japan. As a result of his meritorious service during operations against enemy aggressor forces in Korea from August 1950 to July 1953, he was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. He relocated to Newport News, Va., after marrying Jeanne Bennett Driscoll on June 28, 1975. He retired from Crown Central Petroleum as a Territorial Manager.
In retirement, he spent time on his passions - fishing/boating, landscaping and gourmet cooking. But his foremost passion was fishing, which he dearly loved. He was always ready, willing and able to cast a line with his fishermen family. Because he knew the local and eastern North Carolina waterways so well, boat captains sought him out as first mate on hired charters. He was a member of the Peninsula Salt Water Fishing Association, fished in many tournaments and won numerous citations/awards including Salt Water Fisherman of the Year. Some of his biggest smiles were often seen holding a huge fish in front of him.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne, the love of his life for 35 years, who cared dearly for him at home at the end of his illness. He is also survived by his children, Wanda Shafer (Tony), William (Bubba) Driscoll Jr. (Gail), Alex Ray Driscoll (Suzie), Sherrie Driscoll; stepchildren, Carolyn Gregory, Sandra Zumbrun (Henry), and Donna Barrows (Danny). Survivors also include six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Virginia Oncology Associates and Personal-Touch Hospice Care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.
A celebration of life will be held at Peninsula Funeral Home on Saturday, July 10, at 7 p.m., with the family receiving friends at 6 p.m. The Rev. Klaire Jameson will be officiating. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Mr. Driscoll was a sweet sweet man. I knew him only briefly during a hospital stay, but have several fond memories of him. My favorite includes him stating one morning..."I need to get my wife flowers." "Why? Is it a special occaision?" "No", he replied, "because I love her." It made my heart melt. I know he is dearly missed.

Eddie,

You were tough as nails and kind as a saint. We hope that great fishing hole in the sky is everything you hoped for.

May the thoughts and prayers of those who love you fill your sails with strong winds, support your hulls from strong seas, guide your hands upon the rudder toward pleasant places that you have never been and always wanted to go, and bring you home to a safe and majestic harbor.

All of our Love,
Danny, Donna, and Bryan

What a great neighbor! We have fond memories of Jeanne and Eddie coming over for fireworks on July 4th; and Eddie helping clear a tree from our yard after a storm.

One of our fondest memories was when our son was in the Tiger Cubs and Eddie pledged 10 cents a pin in their bowl-a-thon, more than anyone else. Our son had a really good day bowling and Eddie paid $17.00 for his pledge. Wonderful support for those cubs!

Eddie always had a smile for us and he will be missed.

Jeanne we hope you and your family find comfort in knowing your love for Eddie and his care was obvious. May his memory be eternal.

Aww I'm sorry to hear that Mr. Driscoll passed away. I am one of the nurses that cared for him at the hospital. I'll always remember him for his sense of humor. He was such a funny guy and he lifted my spirits as I'm sure he lifted yours.

Forever Wanda, Eddie Jr , Alex & Sherri

My condolences to my Uncle Eddie's family and friends. I have fond memories of visits between his family and mine when I was young and regret that we drifted apart so many years ago. To my cousins, Wanda, Bubba, Alex & Sherrie, my best wishes and hopes that you and yours are well and, except for greatly missing your father, happy as are myself and my brothers Mike & Pat and our familes.
