To the Pope Family:
It does not seem that long ago that our beloved David left us to be with your Maker. But I want you all to know that he has truly been missed.
I have nominated David to go into the NSU Athletics Hall of Fame, posthumously, which is scheduled for September, 2019. His credentials are so outstanding that he should go in this time, since we haven't had one in 9 years. I'm sure he's smiling down from heaven as I am smiling and delighted to nominate him.
David was a kind, hardworking, no nonsense person who just wanted to be "David." And that's the way he was.
Keep him in your heart and prayers as I will.

To the Pope Family:
Please accept my deepest sympathy in Pope's passing. I am at a total loss for words. We worked together at the Cypress Swimming Pool in Suffolk for Parks and Rec. Never once did he mention his professional basketball days. There was a group of us who were just good old buddies enjoying the children at the pool. He was quiet and always had a smile on his face. I pray that God will comfort your hearts in knowing that he is now out of pain and discomfort.

My prayers are with the entire Pope family. I pray you look for comfort from God, as he will keep you. Buckeye has left a memorable presence in my heart. "Shrimp" he would call me. He made our MHS Class of 1980 so proud. His heart was so big as was his laugh. A talented man, a honest man, a humble man, a man of few words. Buck will truly be missed but heaven has a true Angel. As the days go by and you miss him & his voice, I believe you will feel him close to you & feel some peace just knowing he Loved you.
If this world only had more David Popes..........,

Praying for strength of your family. So very sorry to learn this news of the passing of David. Very fond memories of him doing what he did best. Basketball. He ran the courts like a wild pony and when the ball went through the hoops the whole gym would be in an uproar. Life is so unpredictable and sometimes take us by surprise. But, know one thing, God will give you everything you need to ease your painRegina Nazareth WhiteMenchville Graudating Class of 1981

My heartfelt condolences to Buckeye's family. We went to Menchville together and I remember David as a kind spirit...a gentle giant! The years passed, but seeing him a few years ago at my office at Langley Air Force base brought back fond memories of years passed. Chesapeake Controls, where David was employed, was one of our subcontractors at the time and as soon as I laid my eyes on him, I knew instantly who he was. I looked UP (lol) to him and we hugged and shared some Menchville memories!!! He was still the kind spirit and gentle giant from days passed. Rest in Heaven's Paradise, my friend!

We all experience great sorrow when one of our beloved passes on. Find comfort in knowing that the ALMIGHTY FATHER in HEAVEN love us so very much. In showing this he called home our brother, our friend Buckeye. We will miss him so. He will always be a part of us, being kept alive in our hearts and cherished memories of the times we shared like the Turkey Bowls we played at Booker T. One year Coach Pitts got mad with Buck, Art, Rob and some of the other guys for getting hurt playing football with us. We each have numerous stories about Buckeye with all of them leaving you with a smile. That is a true testament of him. My deepest condolences with the family. May you find peace in the LORD.

David Buckeye Pope, what can I say...I met you my Freshman year at NSU 1980-81. I was introduced to you by my friend Monica, who was one of your high school classmates, and... the rest is history. We dated for 5 or more years. We had some good times, some crazy times, and some not so good times. However through the years we remained best of friends. Family, this is a huge loss for me but I know the God I serve will see me thru. Buckeye was my best friend, and friendships like ours are rare. I praise God for it. I'm going to miss him dearly. Nobody to fuss with and ask me "What is it Redd!" when I called him. Thank you God for putting him in my life. Let us find peace in knowing that God does all things well. Rest peacefully in Paradise my Dear Friend, I Love you Buckeye!
My prayers and condolences to your wife Tammy, and your family. Yours Truly, "Redd"

Sadden to hear of the passing of David, I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with David for several years back in the late 1990's when we both worked for Chesapeake Controls. I remember David as one who was always willing to help out and willing to learn HVAC and I will always remember because of his height that anything I could not reach he would be able to reach with ease. Played one game of one on one with him and he still had the skills of his younger NBA days. I did not score. He told me he enjoyed guarding Michael Jordon.
I will miss him.

To the Pope Family:
Our sincerest sympathy is extended to the Pope Family. David was loved and respected by all who knew him. His candid humor and no nonsense attitude was his way. At Norfolk State, he was CIAA Player of the Year in 1984 and All CIAA from 1981-84. His athletic ability helped to keep us "on the map."
He honestly felt like the son I never had. He always looked after me for which I will be eternally grateful.
There will be no more pain or suffering because God's got him now. So, be thankful for the time you were with him.
If I, or any member of my family can be of assistance, please don't hesitate to call.
Regretfully,
(Ms.) Shirley A. Whitaker
