Alfred Gene Atkins Obituary
KILMARNOCK - Alfred Gene Atkins, 84, of Kilmarnock, Virginia passed away peacefully on March 10, 2014. He was born in Lenoir, N. C., son of the late Robert L. Atkins and Eva H. Atkins. Surviving is his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Sarah F. Atkins; his sons, Jim Atkins and wife, Cindy, Bob Atkins and wife, Glenda and Stevie Atkins and fiancée, Kristie; nine grandchildren; two step grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Leona Grubb and Shirley Hibarger and husband, Robert and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers -in-law, Jimmy Grubb, Teenie Deihl and Kenneth Tasker; his sister-in-law, Louanna Early and his niece, Teri Fisher. As a young man he moved to Newport News, VA and excelled in AAU boxing and semi-pro baseball. His professional career included 46 years of service with Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company Gene was a proponent of serving his community. He was a member and deacon of York Minister Presbyterian Church, a member of the York Lions Club for 20 years and a volunteer for Rappahannock General Hospital for 10 years. He was also a longtime member and Past President of Pinewood Hunt Club and a member of Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club. His love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for hunting, fishing and playing golf. He was also a stained glass artisan. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 22 at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock, VA. For more information, please go to curriefuneral.com.
