Alvin McGLOHN Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Alvin J. McGlohn Sr., 81, went to his Heavenly Father with his family at his side on Dec. 18, 2009.
Born in Crewe to Louis E. and Annie Sue McGlohn on July 24, 1928, his family moved to Newport News shortly after his birth and he had been a resident of the Peninsula since.
He was an active member of North Riverside Baptist Church, an ordained Deacon, a member of the Andrew Sunday School Class and chaired the Transportation and Usher Committees for years.
Mr. McGlohn was employed at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, beginning summer employment in 1945 and full time, as a Hull Designer, in 1947, becoming a Senior Hull Designer for 30 years. McMullen & Associates in 1977, retiring in 1993, as a Section Manager. After retiring, he and June enjoyed traveling, taking many interesting trips with friends. Spending time with family and friends were his most enjoyed activities. Boating and water activities through the years were enjoyable activities as well as watching all sporting events, particularly the Redskins and the Yankees.
Mr. McGlohn is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Leon E. McGlohn.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, June Folkes McGlohn; and his children, Alvin (Jay) and his wife, Sharon, Louis (Jeff), and Julianne and her fiancE, Mike Marse. Also surviving are his devoted grandchildren, Trey and Patrick McGlohn, Ashton and James Phillip Clark, and Mike's son, Alex; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends, all who will miss him so much.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at North Riverside Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Jerry Haywood. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.

Jeff and Family,
So sorry to hear of your loss. It is never easy to lose a parent or loved one, but it is especially difficult when it happens during the holidays. Just remember all the wonderful times and be so grateful for having your dad as long as you did. I lost mine when I was 23. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Jeff and your family,
Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time. Both of our "Pops" were Leos, very strong, outgoing people and both were designers at the Shipyard. Your Dad is in good company in Heaven. Pop will show him the ropes and he'll be fine.
You and I have known each other since we were about 10 and you'll always be special to me.
May God bless you and give you and your family the extra strength that you
need.

Love,

Dear Julianne,
My name is Dale Seley and I am the new pastor at First Baptist of Newport News. I found out that you were a member of our congregation but had not been worshiping with us in a while. I want to invite you to come and worship with us again. We'd love to have you and your family come and be with us. My wife and I would like to extend our sympathy in the passing of your Father. It is my prayer that God will give you and your family His comfort and peace as you say good-bye to one that you loved so much. If there is anything we can do for you and your family at First Church, you only need to call (930-0911). Take care, Dale Seley
