Ann DUNCAN Obituary

HAMPTON - After a long and fruitful life, Ann Masters Duncan died peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010 at the Chesapeake Retirement Home in Newport News, Va.
She was the widow of Jack Wyatt Horseman, and then Andrew Wallace Duncan Jr.
Ann was born on June 7, 1916, in Cape Charles, Va., to the late Major Albert Ralph and Mary Whiting Masters. She spent most of her life in Hampton, Va., where she graduated from Hampton High School in 1933. She was also a 1934 graduate of Newport News Business College. Ann was the owner and operator of Horseman's Florist from 1946-59, when she sold her business. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Hampton and Circle #3, the Hampton Roads Garden Club, the Kecoughtan Literary Society, the Hampton Yacht Club, and the James River Country Club.
Ann was preceded in death by her two sisters, Molly Masters League and Louise Masters Gayle.
She is survived by her foster son, James G. "Jeep" Goodwillie III and his wife, Linda, his two children and grandchildren; her stepdaughters, Madeleine Duncan Hughes and her husband, George, Louise L. Duncan, and Isabel Duncan Hatchett and her husband, Philip; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, several of whom are her namesakes.
Also left to cherish her memory are her nieces and nephews, James B. League III and his wife, Barbara, Mary League Calfee, George B. "Buzz" League and his wife, Kim, Susan Gayle McInnis and her husband, Neill, Ann Gayle Drummond and her husband, Bill, Maria Gayle Schweizer and her husband, Chuck, John F. "Jeff" Gayle Jr. and his wife, Linda, and Mary Gayle "Loukie" Smith and her husband, Hugh. Ann had 19 great-nieces and nephews and 26 great great-nieces and nephews.
Ann was blessed to have so many wonderful people caring for her, both from the Chesapeake, and a devoted group of companions, Evelyn Savage, Juliana Ewur, Dianne Neal, Grace Quaye, Loester Harding, Renita Godwin, Ashley Carrick, Gifty Longdon, and Emma Barnes.
A service in celebration of Ann's life will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Cynthia Rosser Higgins at First Presbyterian Church of Hampton, 514 S. Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA, at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, with interment to follow in St. Johns Cemetery. A reception will follow the services for all who would like to visit with Ann's family.
Ann's wishes were that in lieu of flowers, memorials could be made to First Presbyterian Church of Hampton; the Hampton Public Library, 4207 Victoria Blvd, Hampton, VA 23669; or any other charitable organization.

The Masters girls are together again, celebrating in heaven. Hampton will not be quite the same without them, nor will those they have left behind. They have left us a legacy to cherish and we will miss them greatly until we meet again. Loukie Smith and family
