Anne CROCE Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Anne P. Croce, 84, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2010.
Anne Croce was born in Staten Island, N.Y., and lived most of her life in the New York area. Seeking a retirement facility, she and her husband relocated to Newport News where they were residents of Warwick Forest for the past 5 years. A registered nurse and community activist, Mrs. Croce spent most of her adult life involved with philanthropic organizations: the American Heart Association; the Ronald McDonald House; Roslyn Little League; the Martin Luther King Scholarship Fund; the Catholic Youth Organization and a myriad of others.
In 1989, Mrs. Croce accepted the position of Commissioner of Community Services in the Town of North Hempstead, where she shepherded programs for Senior Citizens, the Animal Shelter and various other groups during her 15-year tenure. Described by May Newburger (former Supervisor, Town of North Hempstead) as "…a problem solver and someone who identifies needs and figures out the solutions to them," Anne Croce has been the recipient of numerous awards and citations throughout her life. Among the most notable were: The Congressional Medal of Merit; Newsday's "Everyday Hero;" and was the first recipient of the Tikkun Olam Award from the Sid Jacobson JCC in Roslyn, N.Y.
Anne Croce is survived by her husband of 59 years, Dr. James P. Croce and their three children, Patricia Balcom (Kenneth Balcom), James P. Croce III (Marie Croce), and Kathleen Kampmann Tache (Thomas Tache); six grandsons, Kenny and Clint Balcom, Austin, Andrew and Kort Kampmann, and Will Croce; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Janet Rubich; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Lally.
Friends are invited to attend a funeral mass to be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 28, at St. Joan of Arc Church in Yorktown.

To Anne's family - I had the good fortune to know Anne during her tenure as North Hempstead Community Services Commissioner. I join you in mourning her loss. She was involved in my work as Assistant Chief Fire Marshal for Nassau County as it related to emergency planning. She hosted many meetings at the Roslyn Community Center and was very much involved in preparing for disaster in Nassau County. She was a most gracious lady; charming, intelligent, tireless and caring. It was a delight to spend time in her company and I shall never forget her. I am sure you will find great comfort in the memories you have of this remarkable lady. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Warmest regards, Peter
