Artemesia CARTER Obituary

HAMPTON - Artemesia Thomason Carter, fourth child of the late Leila E. Lowe and William E. Thomason, was born July 9, 1913, in Waverly Hall, Ga., after an enervating illness she passed away in her sleep.

She taught high school in Georgia, in Mathews, Va., and worked at Hampton University for the Navy in World War III. She joined the Huntington High School staff in 1950 and remained there until integration. She was sent to Denbigh High School, returned to Huntington Middle School and retired from there in 1976.
On Feb. 3, 1937, Artemesia married William Henry Carter, Jr. From this union one daughter, Noel Yvonne, was born.
Among her many organizations were the Virginia Teachers Association, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, The Bea Brummel Wives, Tidewater Tuskegee Alumni Club, and the Girl Scouts. In her retirement, she participated in many bridge clubs and became a Red Hatter. She was also a member of the Hampton Heritage Foundation.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to the Tidewater Tuskegee Alumni Club, P.O. Box 7691, Hampton, VA 2366.

Dear Yvonne:

Mrs. Carter was a truly inspiring woman. Her gracious nature, charm, intellect and rare beauty were widely admired. Though she had a long and fulfilling life, I deeply regret her absence, as every meeting with her was a thorough delight.
It is a blessing that you posess all those marvelous qualities that so generously distinguished your mother. She will live on in you, and in the memories of all whom she knew.
I offer my most sincere condolences and prayers for you and your family. As our lives were made better by Mrs. Carter's presence, so now is Heaven.
Much love...

Yvonne,
I remember Mrs. Carter at Huntington High as my Home Economics teacher. She
was such a pleasant and bright lady.
I pray for your comfort and peace of mind now and in times to come.

To Yvonne and Family: So it is that after a long, well-lived life, your Mother has now entered into the Kingdom to live with our God. Even though your heart is heavy and your eyes damp with tears as you prepare to lay your Mother to rest and say your final earthly goodbyes, know this: For those of us who are believers, the promise is that this is not goodbye, but simply fare ye well until that "Great Gettin' Up Mornin'" when we all will be reunited with our love ones and sing and shout our jubilee.
