Barbara CALL Obituary

YORKTOWN - Barbara Hayden Call, 69, entered into Heaven's eternal activities punctually "on schedule" and rightfully, on Sunday morning, May 23, 2010.
Native of her beloved small town, Saltville, Va., where her effervescent personality and love of community began. She was active for nearly 50 years at First Church of God in Newport News, where she worshipped by services as Bible Teacher, Prayer Warrior, and President of Women of the Church of God. She retired from York County School Systems with 42 years of service where she began as a school bus driver with a love for all children and especially for children with special needs, whom she transported for many years. Barbara went on to spend 20 plus years in Transportation Administration where she focused on driver training, Safety standards, school routing and student activity transportation. Barbara loved to travel the roads of America and was constantly on the go. She loved life and people. She will be welcomed into Heaven, but sorely missed by family and many friends.
Barbara is survived by her husband, "Whitey"; her three sons, Buddy and his wife, Nancy, Benny and his wife, Lisa, and Billy; four grandsons, Curtis and his wife, Samantha, Brandon, Samuel and his wife, Erin, and Wesley; her "Rose Among Thorns" granddaughter, Kelley; one great-grandson, John Henry; and two sisters, Corina Taylor and Helen Doane; and a brother, Hubert Hayden, all of Saltville, Va.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 27, in the chapel of Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until service time in the funeral home. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2010, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Saltville, Va.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk, VA 23507, or to Women of the Church of God, 617 Randolph Road, Newport News, VA 23605. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

To the Family of Barbara Call:
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this very difficult time.

There was no one quite like Barbara. She was an awesome lady, who could make you do things you that you would say you'd never do.

I, for one, said that I would never, ever drive a school bus.

In 1996, I went to the school board office to get an application to apply as a teacher assistant or something else, but not a bus driver. Barbara happened to be there and decided I would be a great candidate for a bus driver. She insisted that she interview me right on the spot. It was a Friday, and she had a class starting on Monday morning. Well, sign me up she did; although, I strongly protested. That was 14 years ago, and I think I have the best job in the world. She told me that I would love it and she was right.

I believe God put her in my path that day as he put her in the path of so many others over the years.

I look forward to seeing her in Heaven some day. God bless all of you!

I was SOOOO sorry to hear of Barbaras passing! I asked about her often, & didn't realize she was sick. She was my trainer for York co school bus about 16yrs ago & she was an awsome lady! Barbara always made you smile even on a bad day & always had an ear if you needed someone to listen. I'll never forget she took me to the steepiest hill I think in Wmbg & made me stop right in the middle w/ a clutch as to make a stop for kids, & said now go! I swore I was gonna just roll on backwards but she had more confidence in other people than they had in themselves! I just feel blessed that I had the chance of working & talking with her, she definatly had an impact on my life among lots of others! We just have to hold on to & cherish the memories that we have. My heart goes out to the whole family. She will be sorely missed!

Whitey and family, I can't begin to tell you how very sorry I am over the death of your precious Barbara. I considered her as one of my closest friends in elementary school. After we both were married and moved to Portsmouth I remembering being so homesick she came to my aide several times before we moved back to Saltville. I'll always remember how sweet and kind she was to me and what an excellent cook she turned out to be even though we both were still teenagers. I do hope the precious memories you have will give you peace and comfort. With thoughts and prayers.

Ms. Barbara trained me to be a superb school bus driver. I was in her last training class before she retired. I recall her telling us that as we drive through the parkway to look out for her, she would be fishing. Well Barbara you are now fishing on the banks of Heaven. May God comfort your family as they decend through the trial of losing a wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and most of all friends. You are in my thoughts and prayers!!

I am so thankful to have had a friend like Barbara. She was and always will be a very special woman to so many. I will miss our long conversations on the phone and the times we shared in fellowship together with the Lord. The last moments my sons and I spent with Barbara and her family, we prayed for her healing. Thank The Lord She Got It! Not a temporary healing but an eternal healing! The greatest healing anyone could ever receive, and after she crossed over into eternity, I can garauntee that she would'nt trade places with anyone on this earth. ( I Corinthians 2:9) But as it is written, Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for them that love him. WE LOVE YOU AND WILL ALWAYS MISS YOU Jake, Julie, Brett, and (Austin Little Preacher Man) Pollard.

As a child growing up and even now as an adult I'll always remember christmas at "Memaw and Pepaw's" house. Even though I was not her grandaughter, she always treated me like I was. She always loved it when everybody came over and sat at the kitchen table and talked, laughed, cried, all over coffee. Always made you feel as though this is your house too. We miss you Memaw and Love you so.

I guess I have known Miss Barbara all my life. My mom drove the bus when we were little and now I ride as an aide and have for nearly 20 years. I remember so well my conversation with her about my job. She told me I would never stay at it as it was a job for an older, married woman, not a young'un like me. Well after all these years, I am now an "older, married woman" with kids. Miss Barbara always laughed about that conversation and my response. I loved her very much and will miss her smile and the way she could always make me laugh. May you rest in peace Miss Barbara and may your family and friends find comfort in each other with your memories to keep us all tied together. I love you.

My deepest sympathies to all of Barbaras Family. I was saddened to hear of Barbaras passing. I, along with so many, had the greatest priviledge to have been taught to drive a school bus by Barbara. With her wealth of knowledge and her gentle touch, I became a bus driver. I would not be where I am today if if weren't for Barbara. We made so many great memories along the way and I will never forget them. Thank you God for allowing me to have had that time with Barbara...I will miss her dearly.

My deepest condolences to the family. Barbara was one of a kind and she will be missed by many. She taught me how to drive and how to take care of the precious cargo we carry everyday. I thank her for that and the many other lessons she taught me in life. She always had a shoulder when one needed it. I loved her and will miss her.
