Benjamin Huggin Obituary

MINERAL - Col. Benjamin A. Huggin Sr. U.S. Army Ret., 72, of Mineral, passed away peacefully in his home after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009.
Col. Huggin is the surviving son of Jamin and Elizabeth Huggin of Greenville, S.C. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Margaret; his daughter, Deborah; and son, Benjamin; along with seven grandchildren whom he loved dearly and enjoyed spending time with on Lake Anna. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Helen and her family.
As a distinguished military graduate of Clemson College, the University of Alabama and the Defense System Management School, Fort Belvoir, Va.
Col. Huggin served his country valiantly in Berlin, Korea, Vietnam and throughout the United States in the 13th Field Artillery, 724th Ordinance Battalion and the 19th and 2nd Infantry. His personal decorations include: Bronze Star Medal, Joint Services Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Overseas Service Bars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry, Cross Unit Citation, General Staff Identification Badge, Army Service Ribbon, Legion of Merit, Army Occupation Medal and Vietnamese Armed Forces Medal, First Class. His final duty assignment was at the Pentagon and Col. Huggin retired honorably from Fort Myer, Va. Ben continued his career with SAIC in McLean, Va., in research and development and fully retired in 2000 to the Lake Anna area where he enjoyed golfing, traveling with his wife and fishing with the grandchildren.
Family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at Woodward Funeral Home, 200 Fredericksburg Avenue, Louisa, VA 23093. A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, in the Fort Myer Chapel with interment to follow with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.

Margaret, I was so saddened to see that Ben had died. No one could have wanted a better boss than he was to me, first at Rock Island Arsenal and then in the Pentagon. He was truly one of the bright lights of the Ordnance Corps.
