HAMPTON - Benjamin M. Copeland Sr., 74, died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012.

A native and lifelong resident of Hampton, he retired as a machinist from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Shop 06, in 1993, after 26 years of service. He was a member of Hampton Baptist Church, Senior Steward for the Metal Trades Council of the Machinists Union, a member of the Hampton Roads Bird Club, the VSO, and the Cape Henry Audubon Society.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Leonis Copeland; his brother, Roy A Stutts; and his sister, Jeanie Stutts Strachan.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise Cleek Copeland; his daughter, Charlotte Copeland Dillow (George) of Hampton; his son, Ben Copeland Jr. (Yvette) of Carrollton; five grandchildren, Cody and Mary Katherine Dillow, and Forrest, Gunnar and Brooke Copeland; his brother, Richard L. Stutts of Hampton; his brothers-in-law, James W, Strachan Sr. of Pamplin, Va., Forrest Cleek (Carol) of Haymarket, Va., and Pat Hoke of Allentown, Pa.; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, at Hampton Baptist Church, followed by a reception in the church fellowship hall. Interment in Parklawn Memorial Park will take place at 2:30 p.m., following the reception.
