Bernard JOHNSON Obituary

HAMPTON - On Aug. 24, 2010, God called his faithful servant, Bernard F. Johnson Sr., to be seated at this right hand.
Bernard was born June 4, 1927, in Newport News, Va., to the late Finley and Arminta Hicks-Johnson.
He was educated in the Newport News Public School System. He was a hard worker and a dedicated father. He was a giving man and was well-known, loved and respected in the community. He was employed by the Newport News Shipyard, for over 21 years, where he retired.
He later met and married the woman of his dreams, Edith Ruffin of 66 years and from that union came five amazing children.
He was preceded in death by both parents; and his wonderful daughter, Bernadette Eason.
He leaves to cherish his wife, Edith; two daughters, Arminta Godwin and Montrue Johnson, both of Hampton, Va.; two sons, Bernard F. Johnson Jr. (Eloise), and James W. Johnson (Cynthia), both of Newport News, Va.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, three sons-in-law; one daughter-in-law; and a host of family, friends and loved ones.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, at Providence Baptist Church, 1331- 30th Street, Newport News. Viewing will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, at Cooke Funeral Chapel, 1601 27th Street, Newport News. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
