Calony Davis Obituary

HAMPTON - Mrs. Calony Perry Davis, 86, and most recently a resident of Coliseum Park Nursing Home, transitioned peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, after a 13 year battle with Alzheimer's.
Born Aug. 16, 1923, in Franklin County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Hardie Bunyan and Lula Brown Perry.
Calony Perry married James Davis on Dec. 23, 1941, and together they moved to Newport News ,Va., to raise their family which grew to include seven children.
Calony loved going to church and faithfully worshipped her Lord at Third Baptist Church and Little Zion Baptist Church. And now, she will meet her Lord with a clear mind, a pain-free body, a joyful heart, and that sassy attitude that we love.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, James Davis Sr.; daughter, Mary Davis; sisters, Naomi White, Olivia Williams, Essie Conyers and Rochelle Gupton; and brothers, Aulcie Perry, Charlie Perry, Roy Perry and Andrew Perry.
Calony Perry Davis leaves behind to cherish her memory, children, Hermenia Porter (Dante) and Joan Davis of Hampton, Va., Vanessa Davis (Allan Sledge) and Bonny Davis (William Martin) of Prince George's County, Md., James Davis Jr. of Newport News, Va., Barbara Overton (Craig ) of Richmond, Va.; sisters, Pleasant Porter of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Dorene Arrington of Hampton, Va.; brother, Ossian Perry of Warrenton, N.C.; brothers-in-law, Samuel Davis (Marie) of Hampton, Va., and John Davis of Warrenton, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other family members and friends.
A viewing will be held Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, VA 23607. The funeral service will be held Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Little Zion Baptist Church, 1824 W. Queen St., Hampton, VA 23666. Dear Vanessa and family,

My condolences at the passing of your loved one. Truly she will be missed by those who love her, yet God loved her best and called her to His eternal rest. May the peace of God that passes all understanding keep you in perfect peace.

To Vanessa and Family: So glad my mother and I got a chance to visit your mother a few times this past year. Even though this disease robbed her of her memory, she still remembered the gospel songs my mother would sing to her. She would join in and I said, "Mrs. Davis you need to join the choir and her reply was "I was about to say the same thing." I know your hearts are heavy now but when it gets unbearable, think of the things she did to make you laugh and hopefully your tears will turn into a smile. Love and Prayers
