Calvin HUGHES Obituary
Calvin was born on Sept. 17, 1939, to the late Hiawatha Hughes Sr. and Eloise W. Hughes. In addition to his parents, a sister, Gloria H. Harrison preceded him in death. Calvin grew up in the North Newport News area. He also spent 16 years in New Kent County, Va., and lived in Carrollton, Va., just prior to his death.
Calvin graduated from Carver High School and attended Norfolk State University where he majored in Industrial Arts. Shortly thereafter he began a 29 year career at the Newport News Ship Building & Dry Dock Company. However; he voluntarily left this career in order to faithfully serve his God, Jehovah. Calvin symbolized his dedication to Jehovah on Feb. 12, 1972. He faithfully served as an Elder and Pioneer in the Newport News West Congregation until his death.
He was loved by many and will be greatly missed by his wife of 49 years Karen Akers Hughes; two sons, Calvin E. Hughes II of Richmond, Va., Chiram E. Hughes (Suzanne) of Bridgeton, N.J.; one daughter, Ratonya H. Vaughn (Christopher) of Hampton; four grandchildren, Calvin Emil Hughes, Alana Caren Hughes, Layla Wren Hughes and Cowen Eli Hughes. He also leaves to cherish his memory one brother, Hiawatha Hughes II (Clementine); one sister, Nadine H. Carter (DeWitt) both of Hampton; one sister-in-law, Barbara A. Neal of Carrollton; one brother-in-law, Jason Harrison of Maryland; and three double first cousins, James Hughes (Janice), Diane H. Chapman, and Michael Hughes (Pat) all of Hampton; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorial services will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 804 41st Street, Newport News, VA 23607, on Wednesday, November 10, at 11 a.m.
