Charlene McPHERSON Obituary

HAMPTON - Charlene Outlaw McPherson, 85, passed away peacefully on Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, at her home surrounded by loving family and friends.
She was born in Duplin County, N.C., and was a lifelong resident of Hampton. Charlene retired in 1987 from the City of Newport News Purchasing Department as the Assistant Buyer for the city. She faithfully served many years on the board of the Newport News Municipal Employees Credit Union. Charlene also served her community as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and the American Red Cross Blood Drive.
Those left to cherish her memory are her beloved and devoted daughter, Sandie McPherson; her loving sons, Donald McPherson Sr. and wife, Sue and Winfred McPherson Jr. and wife, Judy; along with her loving grandchildren, David Rideout, Rachael Pettee, Tracy McPherson, Charlie McPherson Jr., Sinnamon Donavant, Tia Burns, Brandon McPherson, Donald McPherson Jr., Stephen McPherson and numerous great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her extended family, Steve and Karen Mason and their daughters, Sara, Erin and Kelly. She is also survived by Cecile McPherson Owens and children.
Charlene was preceded in death by her husband, Winfred McPherson Sr.; and her son, Charlie McPherson Sr.
Charlene loved to travel and learn about new places both in the United States and abroad. She delighted in learning ballroom dancing and was an avid reader of mystery novels. She was a devoted mother and enjoyed her children and their families and friends, hosting uncountable Sunday and holiday dinners featuring her delicious home cooking. "Ms. Mac" always made sure that everyone who came to her home felt as if they were part of her family and were welcome to join in the celebrations. Charlene was admired and known for her sense of fairness, her independence, a strong will, tireless hard work and a sharp wit that was ever present.
The family requests that any gifts of condolences be donated to Charlene's favorite charity, Operation Smile. There will be no public memorial services. Her closest of family and friends will have a Celebration of Life in her honor at a future time. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

I believe I can speak for the rest of the family in expressing gratitude for your condolences, and for your memories of Momma.
She touched so many lives. And I am blessed that with her 'love without boundaries', she gave me a much larger family than I started my life with. I thank God for Momma and for those she brought into our lives as a precious brother and wonderful sisters. Momma's love have brought these blessings to our family. I miss you, Momma, more than words can say.

I have many wonderful memories of Charlene working in the Purchasing Department, starting in 1970 at ole City Hall on Main Street. I can think of many times that her guidance served me in my life experiences. Over the years we experienced laughter, sorrow, parties, eating out, deep conversations and friendship. She was a fair person and it was my joy and honor to have know her.

To the family of Charlene McPherson.
I worked for the City of Newport News for almost 31 years and knew Charlene from my dealings with the Purchasing Department and being a member of the Credit Union. She was a most gracious lady who liked to smile and always had a kind word for all she met. May the memories all of you shared with her give you comfort at this most difficult time.

I will never forget you, Charlene, and our wonderful times together "back in the days" at good ole' City Hall. To Sandie: I am so grateful for knowing your mom and all of her family. In fact, I felt like I was part of her family. She always included me in her gatherings and parties. Our trip to Paris in 1973 still brings such good memories. My deepest sympathy to you and your family and you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sorry to see that Charlene left us for a better place. I got to know Mrs. Mcpherson when she worked in purchasing with the City. My Dad and I became friends over the years with her. She couldn't have been any nicer person to deal with. I'm glad I got to know her, and I know my Dad used to always have a good laugh from time to time with her.

First off I would like to thank God for blessing me with the oppourtunity of knowing Charlene Mcpherson a.k.a "Ms. Mac". In the short time that I knew her she impacted my life through her love of family, joy for reading, and overall her extremely comical ways. She was known for looking through her recipe book in search of one of her delicious dishes. Her memory will never be forgotten. May God bring healing to the family as well as guidance. I pray we all could have a little bit of Ms. Mac in our hearts. Much Love God Bless

Deepest sympathy to the entire McPherson family. I didn't know Charlene, but Brandon if you read this, I remember you from Chili's .... and the white chocolate molten cake we shared and the birthday card you made me on a napkin .... and I extend my sympathy to you in the loss of your grandmother.
