Charles LINDLEY Obituary

JOHNSON CITY, TENN. - Charles F. Lindley Sr. of the 107 Cutoff in Afton, passed away Monday, Sept. 6, 2010, while at the Johnson City Tennessee Medical Center. He had been battling advanced prostate cancer since being diagnosed late last year.
Born in Statesville, N.C., he later moved with his mother, brother and sisters to Newport News, Va., and quit school at an early age so that he may help support his family. He found work at Newport News Shipyard and Dry Dock Company where he worked until 1976. Within that time, he met and married Elsie Pearl Gibson, to whom he was married for 41 years. In 1976, he was offered the opportunity to transfer to Greeneville, Tenn., to help start a subsidiary of Newport News Shipyard. He remained there until 1993, where he retired after 41 years of service.
While making his home in Greeneville, Mr. Lindley was a member of both the Moose Lodge and Greeneville Masonic Lodge # 3. He was also a member of the Senior Golf League of Kingsport and had a genuine love of the game of golf and the people he played with. He was of the Baptist tradition of faith. He was also an U.S. Army Veteran.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Pearl Lindley; his father and mother, John Turner and Ila Mae Lindley; his brother, John Lindley; four sisters, Pauline Browning, Lucille Bolick, Anne Palmentera and Myrtle Bowers.
Mr. Lindley is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Cathy Lindley of Chuckey, Tenn., George and Brenda Whitehurst of The Villages, Fla.; a daughter, Georgie Carole Creasey of Greeneville, Tenn.; a sister and brother-in-law, Nell and Edward Tissiere of Newport News, Va.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Lindley of Smithfield, Va.; two granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Tina and Steve Stone of Navarre, Fla., and Tammy and Shane Russ of Hampton, Va.; a granddaughter, Robin Morrison of Mosheim; two great-granddaughters, Danielle Whitehurst and Alexis Russ, both of Hampton; several nieces and nephews; and three very special friends, Dave Fontaine of Afton, Jenny Jones, and Betty Jones all of Greeneville.
Honarary Pallbearers are Dave Fontaine, Dr. Brad Strange, Ed Matthews, Avery Blevins, Willard Blevins, Ron Easterwood, Jack Wilson and Bill Moss.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Sept. 11, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N Armistead Ave. in Hampton; where a celebration of Mr. Lindley's life will follow at 7 p.m. Interment will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, in Parklawn Memorial Park in Hampton.
