Charles GILMORE Obituary

HAMPTON - Col. Charles H. Gilmore, (U.S. Army Retired), 95, passed away Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010. Born in New York City, N.Y., he had been a resident of Hampton since 1966.
Col. Gilmore as a child attended St. Agnes Episcopal Church School. He then was in the Cadet Corp at Trinity Episcopal Church School in New York City where he also served with the 7th regiment. At age 20, he worked for the original IBM office on Madison Ave and took Accounting courses at Columbia University. At the beginning of World War II he was direct commissioned into the Army. After the war he returned to IBM and Schumacher fabrics where he worked until 1950. He returned to active duty in 1950 with the U.S. Army, serving in the Pentagon and the Korean War. During that time, Col. Gilmore was one of eight officers chosen to conduct the Korean Prisoner of War Exchange at Panmumjon in 1953. He later retired at Fort Monroe in 1968.
Col. Gilmore was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and the Hampton Historical Society.
Col. Gilmore was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Smith Gilmore.
He is survived by his daughter, Joan W. Gilmore of Hampton; and nephew, Jeffrey Gilmore and his wife, Jean of Ashland, Ore.

My condolences go out to the family. I only knew Mr.Gilmore for a short period of time, but the time was truly a blessing! He will be missed!
