NEWPORT NEWS - Dr. Charles R. "Dick" Pfeifer, 84, passed away at his home. He was born in Oak Park, IL and graduated with a PhD in Physical Chemistry from University of Maryland. He moved to the Peninsula with his family in 1958. He worked at Dow & BASF for 40 years as a chemist. He was very active in the Republican Party and a community activist. He was a founding member of St. Jeromes Catholic Church. He was an honorable and admirable leader of the family with a great moral compass and was a humble servant to the Lord and all who knew him. His gift of encouragement was a light to us all. Dick was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia Pfeifer. He is survived by his three daughters, Mimi Burkhardt, Patty Knapp, and Cindy Pfeifer and his five grandchildren, David, Richard, and John Burkhardt, Matthew Traylor, and Viki Knapp and his brother, Bud Pfeifer. A Funeral Mass will be conducted on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Jerome Catholic Church by Rev. Henry Diesta. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service starting at 12 Noon. Interment will follow the Mass at Peninsula Memorial Park. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
