Charles THOMAS Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - On Saturday, June 26, 2010, an angel whispered, "Be at rest; come home to God," and Charles Sidney Thomas Sr. peacefully departed this earth to journey to a better place. He was 90 years old.
Born May 12, 1920, in Pittsburgh, Pa., Charles "Chuck" Thomas Sr. served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945. He was a member of the 15th Anti-Aircraft Replacement Training Center Army Service Forces Band. In 1943, he married Martha Elizabeth Tillery. Their union produced one son, Charles Sidney Thomas Jr.
Charles Sr. is survived by his wife of 67 years, Martha Thomas; a son, Charles Jr., and daughter-in-law, Vivian Thomas of Hampton, Va.; two grandchildren, Michael K. Thomas of Denver, Colo., and Kelli M. Thomas of Norfolk, Va.; four great-grandchildren; two siblings, Edwin Thomas and Eleanor Jones, both of Nevada; and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held noon Thursday, July 1, at Gethsemane Baptist Church, 3509 Chestnut Avenue, Newport News, Va. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial. The family will receive relatives and friends at the church immediately following the interment. A viewing of Mr. Thomas will be held on Wednesday, June 30, from noon to 6 p.m. at Cooke Brothers Funeral Chapel. Condolences may be sent www.cookebros.com. I have known Mr. Thomas all of my life and he has always been a kind, strong, thoughtful, and considerate man.
