Charles DAVIS Obituary

FARMVILLE, N.C. - Charles William Davis, 85, passed away Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, at home.
Born in Indianapolis, Ind., he was a former resident of Mathews County and Newport News before moving to North Carolina. Mr. Davis served his country honorably, retiring from the U.S. Navy as TMC, after 22 years of service. He spent his career as a submariner, and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Following his military service, he went on to work as a field engineering consultant with Vitro Laboratories. He was an at-large member of the Fleet Reserve Association.
Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his loving wife of 41 years, Jeanne Caminade Davis.
He is survived by two sons, Glen W. Davis of Houston, Texas, and Donald R. Davis of Portsmouth; three daughters, Janice S. Walton of Ruckersville, Va., Lorraine M. Hoffman of Frederick, Md., and Darlene S. Davis of Farmville, N.C.; and a sister, Florence Westendorf of Columbus, Ind. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two great- great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at Weymouth Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, at the funeral home chapel by Donald R. Davis. Interment with full military honors will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.

On behalf of the USS RONQUIL SS-396 Crew, please remember that Chief Davis & his family are in our thoughts & prayers. Chief Davis will be remembered during our "Tolling of the Bells Ceremony" at our 2010 Reunion Banquet in Niagara Falls, NY Oct.18-21, 2010. "SAILOR REST YOUR OAR".

On behalf of the USS STERLET SS392 Association we offer our prayers and comfort to the children of Chief Davis and his family. He served aboard the Sterlt in 1950-52 and was on board to recommission her after her mothballing in 1948. They made the movie Submarine Command on her with William Holden, William Bendix and Nancy Olsen.
We will honor him during our next reunion in November 2011 during our Tolling of the Bells for our departed crew. He also served on the Ronquil, Spearfish, Sea Raven, Tunny, Robert E. Lee. "Atention on Deck" Chief Davis has assumed the watch as he enters his Eternal Patrol.
