My first memories of Charlotte go back to 1962 at Y. H. Thomas Junior High School in Hampton. Mrs. Holland and Mrs. Nottingham had the supposedly brighter kids who were coming from the elementary schools of old Hampton: Union School (at Armstead & Pembroke Avenues near down town Hampton): Moton (of Phoebus); and Aberdeen of Aberdeen Road, near Mercury Boulevard. I was in Mrs. Holland’s class with Charlotte.

Charlotte was not petite, or skinny, but slender – just right! She had a broad engaging smile and her eyes that scintillated under locks of shinny curly hair. She was a lovely hind and a graceful doe whose subtle feminine qualities belied her athletic prowess! Charlotte was as fleet and agile as a gazelle. In a time when there was no emphasis on female athletics, Charlotte would not hesitate to put any of the boys, who considered themselves to be good athletes, to the test.

I remember one day the guys were playing football and the next thing I knew, Charlotte was running the end sweep! I was quite flabbergasted and literally did not know what to make of it. Then I discovered she had two older brothers, so she became the baby tom boy. When we were in Y.H. Thomas Jr. High, one of her brothers was quite an accomplished basketball player at Phenix High School (the high school that all Afro Americans of Hampton had to attend in those days of segregation).

Charlotte could not contain her excitement and pride for her brother, as she beamed with anticipation, as she heard her brothers name on the lips of Hamptonians, as Phenix readied for one of it rival games with Hunttington or Carver both of Newport News.

It was obvious early on that she had very strong family bonds and values. It seems to me, I also remember their father at the games, usually standing near the entrance to the gym or under the backboard near the entrance. The Stevensons appeared to be a strong knit family.

After junior high school, Charlotte opted to go to Kecoughtan High in 1965 under the new freedom of choice policy. I never saw her too often after that, except a few times at Hampton Institute (HI). In the early 1970’s right after she graduated from HI, I ran into her at the Hampton Coliseum, and she told me she was in an executive buyer in the Washington D. C area.

My wife Jackie, was also a classmate of one of those elite 7th grade classrooms, and knew Charlotte well. I often spoke on my last encounter with Charlotte, and hoped I would see her again. It was not destined to be. But we will meet again – just not now…just not now.

To the family of Charlotte Stevenson. I am saddened to learn of Charlotte's passing. She was a wonderful person who came from a distinguished family. Her grandparents, the Clarks were next door neighbors to my grandparents, the Tulls on Woodland Road in Phoebus. I have fond memories of growing up with Charlotte and her brothers John and Reggie. I wish you God's grace in your hour of bereavement.

Dear John and Reggie,
Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your dear sister. We were friends since chilhood and the distance between us did nothing to interfer with our continued love for each other. Her passing adds an "angel on my shoulder" and leaves me with many wonderful memories of our childhood and adult adventures together. We were lifelong friends. May God grant you and your families strength at this time. I am thinking of you, praying for you and extending my deepest sympathy to the entire Stevenson family. I will miss her greatly.
