Christopher MOUNTS Obituary

HAMPTON - Christopher Wayne Mounts passed away peacefully on Nov. 1, 2010, at Sentara Careplex surrounded by his loving family, after a long and courageous battle against complications caused by juvenile diabetes.
Chris was born Dec. 7, 1961, at Dixie Hospital in Hampton, Va., and was a lifelong resident of Hampton.
After graduating from Kecoughtan High School in 1980, Chris worked as a Print Technician before accepting a position at Newport News Shipyard as a pipe fitter. Later he worked for Oceaneering until forced into disability due to complications from Type 1 diabetes.
Chris was a gifted athlete and received many trophies and accolades for his prowess on the baseball field, and he was also a passionate sports fan - especially when it came to anything to do with Duke University. One of his greatest pleasures was to go on "road trips" to watch his team perform in person.
He was a loving son, grandson, brother and uncle, and fiercely supportive of his family.
Chris accepted Christ as his Savior during services held for the passing of his loving uncle, Otis Odell, and is a member of Restoration Church - Phoebus Baptist in Hampton.
Chris is survived by his mother, Joyce Odell Rule; father, Robert W. Rule; brother, Clyde Mounts and wife, Robin; brother, Rick Mounts and wife, Kathy; sister, Sarah Rule Warner and husband, Tim; grandmother, Eunice Newsome; nieces and nephews, Ricky, Drew, Nathan, Amanda and Imala; and many loving extended family members.
The family would like to say thank you for all the support generously rendered by many people during Chris' long battle with diabetes; Dianne and Hope from American Senior Services; the many doctors and surgeons who helped manage his condition; the staff from Sentara Careplex, especially the 4th floor nurses during his final days; and the large community of people who offered sustenance, prayers and words of comfort during very trying times.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Avenue, Hampton, Va. A celebration of Chris' life will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, at the funeral home chapel presided by Pastor Thom Schutt and Pastor David Bounds.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, or any charity of your choice. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Ahhh Chris... You were such a wonderful person and a fighter... I agree with the person who said you had diabetes it DID NOT have you. Your smile will be missed by many! It was by such a good attribute. I enjoyed the time we spent together!

Joyce, I didn't recognize the name when I read the obits but Bill told me about it. I am so sorry you lost your son but God gave him to you for a long time and I know he made you happy. He is in heaven now and he does not have to contend with his diabetes. I know I would love to see you but I am more or less housebound. I send all my love to you and your family and God Bless all of you.

I went to high school with Chris, although, I was not in his class. I was very aware that he had a gift when it came to baseball. He was a great player and he always had a smile on his face. I am sad to hear that he has left this world but I know that it has been a better place because he was in it! I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Sherri Yokum

TO THE MOUNTS FAMILY, EXTENDED FAMILY, AND FRIENDS,
I, TOO, WENT TO KECOUGHTAN HIGH AND GRADUATED WITH CHRIS. I WAS DEEPLY SHOCKED AND SADDENED TO HEAR OF HIS PASSING. UPON SEEING HIS HIGH SCHOOL PICTURE, A HUGE SMILE CAME ACROSS MY FACE. I CAN STILL SEE HIM IN HIS BASEBALL UNIFORM TO THIS DAY. I HAD SEEN CHRIS ONLY A HANDFUL OF TIMES SINCE HIGH SCHOOL. I FONDLY REMEMBER HIS MAGNETIC SMILE AND ZEST FOR LIFE. I AM ALSO A HUGE DUKE BLUE DEVIL BASKETBALL FAN, AND WHILE WATCHING THE GAMES THIS SEASON, I WILL BE THINKING OF CHRIS! PLEASE KNOW THAT YOU ARE ALL IN MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.

Our prayers in Moriah are with you all!

I met Chris, Rick and Clyde Ivan with my Aunt Teri and Uncle Bob right here when I was about 11. They were the nicest family. I remember loving their accent and how polite they were but also how nice they were to me. Especially Chris as he was the closest to my age. He was so handsome, athletic, funny and kind. Just the one time that I met him, he made a huge impression on my life. I know how hard it must be for the ones in his life who got to be with him all the time, to deal with their loss. We know he is whole again and with our Lord. I pray that God gives you all His peace and helps you through this difficult time.
We love you, Bonnie, Jami, Brendan, Nikki and Jesse Smith (family up North)

He will live on in our hearts and memories and now he'll be your angel in the heavens!! God Bless you and all the family. We love you and you will all continue to be in our thoughts and prayers!

My heart goes out to you all. I am sorry for the pain of your loss.
My heart is also pained for Chris was one of the best friends I have had on this planet. One of my greatest pleasures was being lucky enough to be on the end of his road trips to Durham for the games. Having Chris a part of my family for those years has made mine and my family's lives enriched beyond words. He was the kind of guy who takes off work to spend the week cleaning up your home after Hurricane Fran flooded your whole house. Family.
May God share Chris's smile into our saddened thoughts.

I had the privilege of working with Chris at Oceaneering for a number of years. I have fond memories of a particular flight we had together coming home from Hawaii back in 2001. Chris was a fun guy and even though he had serious health issues he always had a smile and a positive attitude.
It does my heart good to know he accepted the Lord as his Savior.

My deepest sympathy to Chris's Family.

Chris tried to help me get over my fear of heights by bungee jumping at King's Dominion. It was fun but didn't work, but I will always love Chris for trying. He was a true friend and a Brother to me. Chris reminded me of my brother especially his love for the Grateful Dead. I have been truly blessed to have known Chris. I met Chris at Fertitta's, where I worked and he fit right in. He looked out for all the girls that worked there. I will miss him deeply and remember him fondly.

Rest in Peace
My Friend,
Marion Smith (Hooch)

To Chris' Family-
I worked with Chris at Oceaneering for 7 years, and from time to time I got the opportunity to chat with him. What I remember most about Chris was his perserverence. He had diabetes, but diabetes did NOT have him. It seemed like he was on a mission to live his life just like everyone else, and enjoy it to the fullest.
During this time of sorrow, may fond memories of time spent with Chris help you heal. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Thankful to have known you, proud to call you Brother. You were always about family - and as a family together we shared the full gamut of life - from elation and accomplishment to grief and failure, and back again. The final road was rough and unpaved, but you fought as only you could. You will always live through our family, though we'll miss you terribly.
