David COATES Obituary

MATHEWS - David Brian Coates, 52, a resident of The Brambles died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, after a courageous journey on this earth. David was born in Newport News, Va., Sept. 9, 1958, and was the son of the late Robbie and Sadie Coates.
David attended the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Center and Gloucester County Schools. For a few years, he worked at the Gloucester Puller Center. Growing up in Gloucester at his home in Glass, he loved skating as a kid and visiting the "oyster house". He liked to talk about his trips to California, Florida and Baltimore. He also loved Country Music. After moving to The Brambles, his interest was bowling and he participated in the regional Special Olympics held in Norfolk.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father and by his special sister, Robbie Jane Coates.
Survivors include three sisters, Dr. Charlotte Coates Wilkes and husband, Lester of Towson, Md., Mary C. Kelsey and husband, Gene of Williamsburg, and Nancy C. Wilson and husband, Don of Fredericksburg; two aunts, Dorothy Parker of Gloucester and Mary Ness of San Diego, Calif.; a number of cousins, nieces, nephews and their children. David also leaves his special family at The Brambles. He loved people and affected the lives of those that surrounded him. His family extends their thanks to all who provided friendship, prayers and care giving over the years.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at Groves Memorial Presbyterian Church, Glass. Pastor Kirk W. (Bill) McCullough will conduct the service. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
