I still think of DD often, especially when I hear the Doobie Brothers or see a house go up.

I had not seen Double D in a bunch of years but think of him frequently. My career took me to Maryland, Virginia Beach, Midlothian and finally Tampa Bay and fell out of touch.I wish I had taken up golf earlier than 1992. I surely would have enjoyed being on the course with Don and Bo. Double D and Bo were great guys to be around and fun to jam on classic rock in Ark, Va. I sense that Bo has lost Frances. If that is the case, I send sincere condolences to Bo and his boys. I knew several of the Gainers having played in a band with Pat back in the late 60s. My wife Tinna also knew Molly and Frances since the Garrisons and Gainers all attended Mt. Carmel Catholic Church for many years. The loss of good people is a sad thing.

It was very saddening to hear of Double D passing away. He was a fun guy and a noteworthy musician with whom I enjoyed playing. My regret is we never golfed together once I actually learned how to play. Knowing Double D and his relationship with brother Bo made me realize how special having a brother could have been. Best wishes to Bo and family.

Dear Bo, We just learned of Don's passing and are so saddened by this news. Please know that our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with you, your family, and with Joy, as well. The last time we saw Don was at the Spring YHS Mixer last year. He an Joy were together and both seemed so, so happy! Steve and talked on the way home about what a kind and nice person Don "is", and how he always brought such fun and lightness into any gathering. That goes for you, too, Bo! Bo, I am so sorry to hear we've lost Double D. You guys were the best example of real brotherhood I have ever seen. I know that Randy loved and admired DD as did everybody who knew him. Double D gave me my first paying music gig with your band at a house party in Queens Lake in 1967. He was always enthusiastic and supportive of his friends. DD was the best sound man I ever worked with.
He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. Do you remember the time he woke up snoozin' Hooven, at my house, by blowing a huge low note on my bass sax? The world is a poorer place without Don Davey.

Although I didn't see Double D too often when I did it was always a pleasure. He and Bo were a real team. Few brothers can get along like those two. May we all learn from them. They helped me work on my own house and everyone familiar with them knows, their work was first are and they didn't cut corners or rush through. The epitome of laid back. No fussing, cussing, it'll get done in its own time. May I learn from this. My fondest memory of double D is when he played guitar at my father's funeral. I asked him if he would and he did not hesitate, nor would he take any payment. Little did I know at the time the practice it takes for even one song to be presented worthy for public performance. What a wonderful performance him and Steve Motley did on Conway Twitty's “That's my Job.” I will be forever grateful to both of them for their great rendition of that song. The other side is not too far away for any of us, young or old and when I get there I hope I can thank him again.

Dearest Bo and family,
I'm so sorry for your loss. How could it be true that we are the age when we are passing away. It seems like yesterday that we laughing and dancing in our livingroom with the band playing rockin music that we all loved so much. And, always the kindness and the care that your mother showed us in school. I feel like I've lost a member of my own family. Blessings on you and I hope that the happy memories flood back to you very soon and for a long time to come.

I, too, echo the sentiments expressed so well by everyone here. One of my favorite memories of DD was at a class reunion. He was sharing his joy at getting to work for Bruce Hornsby to build a new home for the musician. His eyes just reflected such pleasure at the itricate and beautiful wood work that Hornsby ordered. DD was a person who put his being into his work and had such a joy in living!
My husband, Charles R Smith, and I will miss him very much. May your memories carry through this difficult time.

I am very saddened by your loss Boh.DD was a great guy and very talented man, as well.Since I took up golf back in '92, I many times remember the humiliating afternoon in '85 with you and DD as I wacked and swatted a ball around the Gloucester golf track in all directions. It was several years later I finally got hooked on the game and became decent at it.I started when my little boy was 4 and putted around a green near my house. Cameron went on to win 2 state titles in Florida and played collegiate golf at Florida State. You guys showed great patience that day with me and I always remembered that when I played with novices. The jams we had in your out building were memorable. I have several photos from one of them which mean a lot to me and I posted them on Facebook for posterity a couple of years ago..Having left Tidewater in '90 I have regrettably been totally out of touch. It is at times like this the past comes back.I am very sorry about DD and you and your family's loss.By the way, I got word to Tom Griffith in Atlanta.I spoke with his brother Jim last night and learned you and Tom were friends in high school. We are friends through golf.My affiliation with the game started that afternoon with you and DD.God bless. Larry.
