Donald LINDSAY Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Donald M. Lindsay passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009 at the age of 79.
Donald was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he apprenticed as a blacksmith at the age of 14. In his late 20's, he boarded the SS United States to begin a new career in New York City as an Ornamental Blacksmith. Two years later he sent for his family to join him and they started a new life in the Fox Hill Section of Hampton, Va., where they lived for 20 years before relocating to Williamsburg.
He had a long career with Virginia Steel. During his retirement years, Donald was an employee with the James City County Parks. Donald was a devoted family man and lover of sports. He was a great fan of the Fox Hill fast-pitch softball. He was well known in Hampton for establishing the Kecoughtan High School boy's soccer program.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Moira; daughter, Lorraine Watkins and her husband, Jeff; sons, Ross and Alan Lindsay; two granddaughters, Angela Holman and Lauren Watkins; and two great-granddaughters, Annabelle and Willow Holman. He also leaves behind many relatives in Scotland and Canada.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff from Riverside Hospice, Sentara Hospital and his physicians for their compassionate care during his illness.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Parkinson's Foundation at 1501 NW 9th Avenue/Bob Hope Rd., Miami, FL 33136-1494.
A Memorial Service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg.

You have my sincerest condolences. Our (my wife and I) thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Mrs. Lindsay. Alan coached me at Kecoughtan High School and he has told many stories about his father, Mr. Lindsay. Every lap we took before practice (which encompassed the school's sports complex) was named in his honor. His contribution to the building of the KHS soccer program from the ground up will never be forgotten. God Bless and take care.

Sincerely,
Frank Hughes
