Doris ENGLE Obituary

POQUOSON - Doris Gray Engle passed away on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, after a valiant fight against cancer.
Doris was born in Affinity, W.Va., on Dec. 8, 1946, to John J. and Virgie L. Gray, and was predeceased by both parents.
Doris is survived by her husband of 36 years, John; by her three brothers and one sister, Robert Gray and wife, Susan of Severna Park, Md., Linda G. Pegram and husband, Ron of Newport News, Jim Gray and wife, Lenora of Greensboro, N.C., and Ralph Gray and wife, Georgia of New Kent, Va.; nephew, Ronald Pegram and wife, Beth, and great-nieces, Brianna and Bethann, all of Poquoson; niece, Kristie Pegram and great-nephew, Kaleb, both of Newport News; niece, Vanessa Gray of Greensboro, N.C.; nephew, John Gray; and niece, Samantha Gray, both of New Kent, Va. She is also survived by the extended family of husband, John Engle.
Doris attended Midway Elementary School and Sophia High School in West Virginia, then moved with her family to Newport News in 1961, where she graduated from Warwick High School in 1964. In 1993, she retired as a budget analyst from Fort Eustis after 25 years of service, and then from the City of Newport News in 2007.
Doris enjoyed entertaining family and friends, cooking, reading, and keeping John busy with a never ending to-do list. She enjoyed weekend Pinochle games with John and their friends Norm and Teresa, and relished receiving their famous winner's dinners – menus selected by the winning couple and prepared and served in five-star fashion by the losing couple.
Doris would like to thank her family doctor, Sarah Bushey, who she greatly respected and who felt like a member of her family. She also thanks all the "angels" who looked over her and assisted in getting her through the hospital stays and moved in until she and John could manage alone. Family angels include John, Jim, Lenora, and Beth, and dear friends Sue Hollenbeck, Leila Thomas, Brenda Heffington, Norm and Teresa Davis, and Harriett Rowe.
A memorial service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson. Her request was to be cremated, with her ashes spread in the beautiful "tropical paradise" garden John created at their home.
The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Heartland Hospice, 11835 Fishing Point Dr., Suite 101, Newport News, VA 23606. Online condolences to www.claytorrollins.com. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
