SMITHFIELD - Dorothy P. Gary passed away on May 1, 2014 in Smithfield, Virginia. She was born on February 3, 1922 in Syracuse, New York. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Howland R. "Bud" Gary. She was also predeceased by a sister, Carol P. Taylor. Dorothy was the daughter of the late James E. and Bertha Y. Pierce, both formerly of Smithfield. She is survived by her daughters, Janet W. Schlosser of Roanoke, VA and her fiancée, Ed Dixon; Janice W. Henry and her husband, Herbert E. Henry of Tampa, FL; Diane W. Hayes and her husband, Robert S. Hayes of Smithfield, VA; Shelley G. Noyes and her husband, Robert W. Noyes of El Dorado Hills, CA; and Peter C. Gary and his wife, Ming Gary of Thailand. She is also survived by her brother, Donald Pierce; and 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Dorothy graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk, VA in 1940 and continued to reside in Norfolk until 1963 when she moved with her family to Annadale, VA. In 1971, her late husband's employment moved them to Apalachin, NY and then later move to Tehran, Iran for two years before retiring in Smithfield, VA in 1982. Dorothy loved music and was always active in music groups throughout her life. She sang in the choirs of every church she attended. She participated in the Fairfax and Binghamton Choral Societies. Dorothy even participated in the Liberty Belles Chorus in Tehran, Iran. She was also very active in her church in Smithfield, Christ Episcopal Church, for many years. She was also a dedicated volunteer in many organizations throughout her lifetime. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Smithfield on Thursday, May 8 at 2:00pm with the Rev. Joseph Savinsky and Rev. Derek Pringle officiating. The family suggests memorial donations to the Riverside Regional Medical Center Hospice Fund, 500 J. Clyde Morris Blvd, Newport News, VA 23601.
