E. DAWSON Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Dr. Edward Jack Dawson Jr., 81, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at home. He was a prominent local dentist for more than 40 years. Born and reared in Newport News, he was the son of the late Margaret Stinnett Dawson and Edward Jack Dawson.
Dr. Dawson attended Hilton Elementary School and graduated from Warwick High School in 1947. In 1951, he graduated from the College of William and Mary and in 1955 from the Medical College of Virginia where he was a member of Psi Omega National Dental Fraternity. He then served two years as a captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corp., returning to Newport News to serve three generations of patients.
Jack was a member of the Peninsula Dental Society, the Virginia State Dental Association and the American Dental Society. A gifted man, he was a lifelong sailor, an accomplished craftsman who built beautiful heirloom furniture and designed homes for family and friends. He continued to study the sciences and nurture his love of classical music as well as explore the world through travel and reading. A member of the James River Country Club and the Hampton Roads German Club, he belonged to St. Andrews Episcopal Church.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joan DeAlba Dawson; and three daughters, Elizabeth Dawson Ende (Mark), Susanne Dawson Swain (Donald), and Henly Dawson Deutsch (Mark); five grandsons, Edward Isaac Ende, Logan Adams Ende, William Dawson Hodges, Jack Stefan Deutsch, and Davis Kollinger Deutsch; and brother, Dr. Jerry L. Dawson; as well as many extended family.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends at the James River Country Club immediately following the service.

Now in my eighties, I look back and particularly recall Jack's passion for sailing. Though I no longer keep a sailboat, I believe my passion for the activity originated from him. Jack infused me with everything wonderful about sailing. Over the years, I have been privileged to take Kate and family for weekend sailing trips in and around the Bay. I believe that they too caught the fever. I hope all of you stay well, enjoy one another and life itself. Love, Bob

Dear Mrs Dawson, Lisa, Susanne and Henley,
I was so very sad to hear that Mr Dawson had passed away the other day.
I cherish the memories of the very kind, warm and cheerful man I remember Mr Dawson was, which added sunny and bright memories to our High School years. We always felt welcome! "Mr Dawson and his girls!!".
I remember when me and my dad came over to the States again after 20 years and we were invited for lunch at your new house at James Landing.
Great hospitality and many laughs - as well as all the fantastic hand crafts done by Mr Dawson in the house. I can still hear him say "you didn't know that Charlotte, did you", when explaining a function new to me.
My thoughts are with you all at this sad and difficult time.
Lots of love

Dr. Dawson was a wonderful man and gifted dentist. He is a part of my fondest childhood memories. I will always remember the welcoming office with the drawer full of rings. It takes a lot to make a child look forward to a dental visit but Dr. Dawson did just that. I have lost my parents in recent years, Mom at 87 and Daddy at 90 in 2011. They both died with a mouth full of there own teeth. That is quite an accomplishment for children raised during the Great Depression. Dr. Dawson was our family dentist from 1960 until he retired and he can take full credit for the outstanding care that he gave all of us. My deepest sympathy to the Dawson family and all the friends who will both rejoice in knowing him and miss him greatly.

Joan, Lisa, Susanne and Henley … Kate called with the unexpected and very sad news. I know this is a terrible loss for the entire family and my thoughts are with you today. I am so sorry Jack had to spend his last years burdened with such a serious health problem. I have such respect and admiration for him. As his obituary states so well, he was a person of so many talents and interests as well as kindness and graciousness. His memory will be lasting. Bob

The planet lost one of it's most wonderful citizens this week - Dr. Dawson was a great father-in-law to me, a great grandfather to my sons, and a great dad to my wife Henly. He will be missed but never forgotten since I see him in the eyes and souls of my kids everyday (as well as about half the furniture in my house). Rest in peace Dr. Dawson.
