TOANO - Edgar Alamander "Ed" Ball, II, 64, passed away in his home with his wife by his side, after a lengthy battle with cancer on Thursday, November 28, 2013. A native of Pasadena, Calif., Ed had been a peninsula resident since 1964, living in Toano, Va. for the past 8 years. In 1969, he attended the Apprentice School and after graduating worked at the Newport News Shipyard as a Structural Engineer in the Structural Submarine Engineering and Design Department. After 40 years of service, Ed was honored with the title of Master Shipbuilder. He liked to restore cars and collect coins and stamps, but his love was scuba diving and anything dealing with marine life, a love that he passed down to his grandson. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Alamander Ball, Sr., in 2004 and Mary Kessack Ball in 1992. Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Barbara Hornsby Ball; son, Edgar "Eddie" Alamander Ball, III; sister, Pamela Ann Campell; brother, James Bertram Ball; grandchildren, Taylor Renee Ball, Tyler Nathaniel Ball, and Trent McKean Ball; sister-in-law, Patricia Stanley, and her husband Raymond, and four nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church at 11:30 a.m. Friday, December 6 with a reception following.
