YORKTOWN - Estill Allen Cooper Jr., 78, passed away Friday, June 8, 2012, in Newport News, Va. He was a native of Thor, Ky. and resident of Yorktown, Va., for 18 years.
Allen was a Naval Aviator for 21 1/2 years and retired from the U.S. Navy as a captain. He was a Vietnam era vet., and graduate of Berea College, Berea, Ky., with a degree in biology. He was also a member of the Hawkeye Association. Captain Cooper was designated a Naval Aviator on March 1, 1957. He served with the VAW-12, NAS Quonset Point, R.I., NAS Norfolk; RVAW-120 NAS, and VAW 125, Norfolk. Carrier service includes USS Essex, USS Randolph, USS Independence, C.O. VAW 125 E-2 Hawkeye Squadron, aboard the USS John F. Kennedy; and as the executive officer of the USS Guadalcanal. He worked with the CNO in Naval Air Warfare (OP-05) and Armed Forces Staff College Instructor retiring in November, 1982.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Estill A. Cooper Sr., and Hazel P'Simer Cooper.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Eileen Cooper; daughter, Alana Kay Cooper; three sons, Phillip Edward Cooper, Estill Allen Cooper III, Erin Lee Cooper; stepson, Clark L. Kinney; two sisters, Minnetta Alice Cooper, Ann Cooper Shaw; one nephew, Paul J. Temple.
The family will receive friends Thursday, June 14, 2012, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held Friday, June 15, at 11 a.m. in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
