Ethel Tully Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Services are scheduled this Saturday for Ethel McCann Tully, 86, of Williamsburg, who died Oct. 26, 2009, following a short illness.
She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1923. Her family moved to Newport News three years later. They lived near the James River, where she enjoyed observing the storms.
She was retired as a librarian assistant for Newport News Schools, having worked 20 years. She had studied to become a nurse, but when World War II broke out, she worked at the Newport News Shipyard, interpreting blueprints for Navy ships.
She was married to Roland Tully of Newport News for 52 years. He died in 1994. Together they enjoyed roller-skating, playing golf, and Coca-Cola collectibles. She was an avid reader, especially of historical novels and mysteries.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
She leaves behind four children, R. Scot Tully of Yorktown, Bonnie Tully O'Donovan of James City, Tracey Tully Schenk of James City, and Harry Tully of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Bucktrout Funeral Home in Williamsburg. A reception for family and friends will follow at the O'Donovan household in Kingsmill.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Greater Williamsburg Heritage Humane Society. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

I was so sorry to hear about your mother's passing. I worked with her in the library at several schools in Newport News. She was so much fun to work with and an excellent library assistant. She often spoke of her children and her love of golf. My sympathy on your loss.

Bonnie, Scot, Tracey, Harry, so sorry to hear of your mothers passing. I have many fond memories of Aunt Ethel.
She and your dad taught me to roller skate when I was a child. Visiting with my parents to your home was always fun. Ethel was a classy lady.
Cousins, my thoughts and sympathy are with you at this time.

Scot, even though I didn't have the pleasure of knowing your mom, I know she must have been a fine person, and a loving mother, to have raised such a devoted son. You and your family will be in my prayers, and you have my deepest sympathy.
