Filomena KREYKENBOHM Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Filomena Mildred Marino Kreykenbohm, 86, died Jan. 7, 2011, in Newport News, Va., after a brief illness.
A native of New Haven, Conn., she was born on Nov. 11, 1923. After graduating from the Yale New Haven School of Nursing, she then traveled to Las Cruses, New Mexico with her husband, Warren Kreykenbohm, where she worked in private practice, remembering traveling late at night into the desert to deliver babies on the Indian reservations. Her nursing career spanned from that point to surgical nursing in Tokyo and then to Seoul, Korea and Bangkok, Thailand. After returning to the United States from Monrovia, Liberia, the family moved to Stafford, Va., where she then worked in the Head Start Program for Stafford County. Her final years before retiring were spent as director of nursing in long-term care facilities in Stafford and Fredericksburg.
She was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fredericksburg, Va., where as a Secular Order Franciscan she ministered to the jails and prison in Fredericksburg. Her last eight years were as a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Catholic Church in Newport News.
Mildred was a gourmet cook preparing fare from all over the world and was noted for her preparation of exotic dishes and elegant dinners. Being invited to join them for dinner was a special occasion. Many of her special evenings included political leaders and dignitaries from Thailand and Liberia.
She was preceded in death by her son, Warren (Carl) Kreykenbohm.
She is survived by her sister, Mrs. June Page of Hamden, Conn.; her brother, Paul Marino and his wife, Janice of Dothan, Ala.; daughter, Tyra Freed and her husband, Dr. John Freed of Newport News, Va.; grandson, Stephen Sexton of Newport News. Additionally, she will be greatly missed by her five nieces and nephews, Tonia Everage, Heather Hinckley, Lowell Page, Daniel Page, and Jeffrey Marino; as well as her son-in-law's daughters, Laura Freed and Jennifer Hall.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, by Father Peter Tran, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Newport News. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 100 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA 23601.
Arrangements are by Berceuse Funeral Home, in Hampton, 757-825-8070. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
