NEWPORT NEWS - Garland Ray Walker, Sr., 80, of Newport News, died Saturday morning May 10, 2014. He was born in Currituck County, NC but grew up in nearby Hertford in the home of his maternal grandparents, Clarence and Nevada Burton Walker. He loved reminiscing about his years in the town on the Perquimans River and his many friends who shared adventures with him during his youth. After his graduation from Perquimans County High School, he was employed with then VEPCO, now Dominion Resources, beginning in 1952 at the old Cove Street location in Norfolk, VA and ending 42 years later in the division headquarters in Norfolk, VA. During his employment he worked at several locations in North Carolina and Virginia, 15 being at G Street in Hampton. He truly loved his work and cherished the many friends with whom he shared responsibilities over the years. He was also a proud veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U. S. Army from 1953 to 1955. Besides his grandparents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Newbern; sister, Maxine Newbern Jones (Charlie); aunts, Essie Walker, Shirley Matthews (Glenn); uncle, Morgan Walker (Cleo); and brother-in-law, Leon Lane. Survivors include his wife of sixty-one years, Glenda Lane Walker; son, Garland Ray Walker, Jr. (Karen); daughters, Cynthia Corks (David), Gwen Sammon (Joseph), and Karen Kavanaugh; grandsons, Dr. Nicholas Paphitis (Laura), Petty Officer 1st Class, USCG Geoffrey Hendrix (Jennifer), Jon Hendrix, Seth Hendrix, and Michael Kavanaugh (Rachel); granddaughters, Jessica Dennis (Matt), Kristen Paphitis, Lane Hendrix; great grandchildren, Haylie Hiles, Lily and Leah Paphitis, Connor Kavanaugh, and Liam Dennis; sister, Jean Newbern Oliver (Robert); brother-in-law, Donald Lane (Nora); sisters-in-law, Margaret Lane and Peggy Newbern. He is also survived by many dear nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart. The family would like to express their appreciation to his caregivers at Riverside Hospital and thoughtful, supportive neighbors. His children would like to express their heartfelt appreciation for the love and care given by their mother during the past year. Visitation will be at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 210 Harpersville Road in Newport News on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at 11:00 AM, followed by a memorial service at noon. There will be a private interment at the Albert G.
